Hi there


Just been on a longer trip and now that the wheather is warmer outside i was looking at the temp gauge, regardels how hot is the engine it goes just to half. Well now i know about the soldering behind the dashboard. The trouble is that i don't hear the cooling fans on. If i put the dashboard in test mode and verryfy the temperature EN9 T was as low as 90 (dasboard indication not degrees) - this means middle of the normal band . My question is when the fans kick in ? I have took a multimeter and measured the ECT and seems fine (i got a table with temp / sensor ohmic value). I'm a bit worried as after the end of the trip the engine was super heated.....when i lift the bonet you could make barbacue in there  :o, and still there was no cooling. When i turn on the AC the fans will work (at slow speed).What could i further check to see if there is a trouble or i'm just over-reacting

That's a bit releaving. Does anybody knows what's the normal working temperature for the engine ? I know that in principle is a bit over the boiling point of water somewhere form 98 degrees to 110.

I always thought that it is around 80 degrees. Am I wrong?

Normal operating temperature is determined by the thermostat rating, but the cooling fans may not cut in until close to or over 100degC.  The fact they run when air-con is on proves that they are working and if the engine runs normally when hot and cold then there's no reason to suspect the ECT sensor.

Incidentally, the boiling point of water is raised because the cooling system is pressurised - this is why you should never remove the cap when the engine has overheated -  the sudden drop in pressure will cause the coolant to boil violently and throw it out the expansion tank!

So it's down to measuring the temp  ;D. Somehow i fell that the temp is over 100 deg C. By the way i found out that the t-stat is either not present or is blocked open or block at half, because imediatly afeter engine start the water in the T-stat hosing starts to warm up and after a long long time (and serious trafic) the temp gauge starts to creep up to the middle....

Does indeed sound like a busted or AWOL 'stat - temperature gauge should get about half-way up and the thermostat open/close as needed to keep it there.
