hi all.i ihave 1998 2.3 have had the car over 4 years now and done 50000 miles.the problem i have ,and its done it from day one ,is reverse.when left over night or for longr than 5 hours or so reverse can take about a minute or more to engage sometimes with a thud.other than that every thing else to do with gearbox works perfect like when car is warm no prpblems.gearbox oil is right colour but is slightly over max

I'm not familiar with autoboxes, but someone will shorely help. From what i leaned here, it could be that the autobox filter could be cloged.

I'm hearing a lot about gearboxes thumping into gear or taking ages to shift.  Makes me wonder if maybe the wrong viscosity oil is being used (too thick when cold?) as the problem is less when warmed up.  Usual things apply, replace oil filter inside gearbox if not done recently.

Might also be worth checking the fluid level when in neutral and then when put into gear- if it drops slowly then suspect a restriction in the hydraulics (blocked filter, etc.)  If it drops quickly and then thumps into gear seconds later then it could be a leaking oil seal on the servos or clutches.
