Title: Alarm problem...
Post by tooseyboy on Apr 25th, 2006, 2:25pm
Hello guys,

New to the fora.

Had a Scorpio Ultima 2.9 given to me by my brother.

He had quite a few problems and using this site (must say it is superb) I have managed to eliminate a battery problem.  :D

Car now starts and runs quite well, apart from the alarm occasionally going off. From the fault finding pages it would seem the Fuel Shut off Switch could be the problem. Upon starting, all dials rotate fully clockwise and then return to zero, the little red alarm flash's (PATS?) even with the engine running.
Any advice would be most appreciated?

Could someone please give me an idea of what cost a new Fuel Cut off Switch would be and most importantly, are the switch's available?

The dials rotating fully and then returning is a well known problem on here. New battery should fix that for you. Not sure about the PATs light but I'm sure that someone will let you know.

Thunderchild:

Thank you for that.

A new battery has been fitted and is functioning as it should, I think. Reading 13.9 to 14.1?
My hope was that a new battery would cure the alarm problem but no joy.

Thanks again for the reply.

Read this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1145907422. The bonnet switch is also a known problem when it comes to the alarm. This may also help re the light flashing. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm.

I found that the boot release button wasn't popping out fully (sticking a bit) and would trigger the alarm randomly.  Disconnected it until I got chance to free it off - no more false alarms.

Hi Simmo:

Being new to these Scorpios', I find it most confusing. Would the needle and alarm problem be one and the same?

Will have to look at the Bonnet switch.

sector-9:

Will have a look at your suggestion in the morning, thank you.

My original question stands, what is the cost of and where can one purchase a Fuel Cut off Switch, please?
(If required).

Many thanks.

Ted

Not sure what you mean by fuel cut-off switch.  I presume you mean the inertia safety switch which will cut out the fuel pump and unlock the doors in the event of a collision?  They are available (perhaps not identical but Sierras and Granadas with fuel injection all have them), but I doubt this is related to your alarm or starting problems.

I believe if there's a problem with the PATS system it will flash a code through the LED when the ignition is on, but couldn't tell you more as mine doesn't have it.

I also had a problem where my alarm would occasionally go off when I first got my scorp, I also had the problem with my tailgate not opening due to the button sticking. I eventullay fixed the tailgate with a drop of WD40, it seems that in fixing one problem I may have inadvertently fixed the other as the alarm problem also stopped.

The 'needles' effect is a sign of battery problems BUT these cars are prone to all sorts of quirks if the power isn't sufficient to supply all the units. I would personally feel that the alarm issue is a separate problem but as you will see from Mummras' post a dodgy switch,as with his tailgate button, is the most likely. The alarm mechanism is built in to the lock and obviously sorting that sorted the alarm by enabling the switch to work correctly.

Hi Guys,

My problem(s) update.
Having read all your replies to my original question, I have acted on all the advice.
The boot lock and switch work, as they should.

New battery fitted, alarm and pats problem still exists.
Discovered the Horn wasn't working. Feel a bit silly asking this but where is the horn situated, I can’t find it…

After a good read up of various threads on here, I tried a few tests.
My brother had an electrician work on the car, at least twice by all accounts. I discovered some tests had been performed on the Central fuse box.
Found a test wire connected to where fuse number nine should be, the other connection goes to R10. Could this be why the horn does not work?

Tried the test by holding in the (rear, I think) screen switch and turning on the ignition. Then tried the doors and boot, the warning alarm sounded on all of these when opened. When I tried the bonnet, there was no audible warning sound as with the other doors and the boot.
Could this be the bonnet switch not functioning correctly?

Will keep you updated and thanks once again for your help. What a nice friendly site this is and so helpful.

Hi Ted

The horn is situated on the under side of the car, drivers side, by the radiator mounting bolt.

It does sound like the bonnet switch may be faulty, the best way to tell is to put a meter across the connector and it should be dead short with the switch depressed and open circuit with the switch released.

Hi Mummra,

Thanks for that, been very busy today so will have a look tomorrow.
Have contacted the electrician and awaiting his visit.

The alarm horn is situated behind the battery but the Boot/bonnet switch is suspect for the alarm going off... if it gets pressed several time in quicjk sucession the alarm will go off it is a way of testing it...

Mummra, Snoopy:

You are correct, it would seem it is the Bonnet switch. What a good thing to know about that bonnet switch test, thanks.

Horn problem is a bit more involved. Where the cover had been fitted incorrectly, it had allowed rain to enter on that corner. Retaining clip was fitted incorrectly...
It would seem that I have just discovered that problem before any lasting damage to the fusebox.
Will ensure all is clean before I attempt anything more.

Another concern I have is with the relays, I do have some concerns that they have been inserted incorrectly?

Central fuse box.

R3, 4, 5  & 6 Yellow  5FC
R10              Brown
R11 & 12      White  5FD

Once again thank you for your help. Can see how people get involved with these cars, missed two cups of tea, now that is most unlike me...
