What size are the standard speakers on the saloon parcel shelf and in the front doors?

I want to upgrade the "premium" items...because they are RUBBISH!!!

Anyone got any advice on replacements? I have got a 600W amp on order.

the items in the rear shelf are 5x7's but the whole unit is sealed so that you cannot remove the speakers you can only remove the whole thing.

im working on fitting some alpine 5x7's into these units and if successful i will post how i did it! so watch this space

i believe the front speakers are 4 inch

I replaced front and back speakers with ones of my own choice. I decided upon standard round speakers. I removed the unit from the fear of the car and brought one in. Lots of head scratching from the Halfords Boy. No help there!

I inverted the speaker unit and used my Dremel tool to CAREFULLY remove the plastic melt from around the imagined lugs. You must be very careful as the mesh cowling has very small extension lugs. You will easily find them as you "mill" away the plastic melt. Carefully work either side of these lugs to remove the majority of the melt. There is a real danger of removing too much of the melt on the outside of the lug and making a noticible hole. Use a very fine tool and you will be ok. Go round all the lugs; some will be easier than others. When satisfied with the removal I then applied gentle pressure to the tabs in turn to 'break' the hold of the remaining bits of the plastic melt. Sweaty palms, but the job was very easily done. Remove the old big speaker by breaking the securing tabs that hold it to the mount. Cut the leads to the small 'tweeter' speaker but DO NOT try to remove it - it is not needed any more so leave it alone. You can cut away the old connector block BUT make sure you leave some of the cable attached to it. Look carefully at the edge of the connector block and you will see a + and - for the respective terminals. Label the bare cables accordingly. I added a small amount of extra new lead to allow me a bit more freedom of movement.

I then ground away the raised plastic mount with my Dremel. I bought some acrylic sheet from Homebase and cut it to fit.

Choose the speaker to fit. I decided upon round ones. Using the template I cut the hole for the new speaker. Just make sure you are happy with the positioning of the new speaker. A bit of matt black spray then epoxy resin to bond the painted acrylic insert to the old speaker mounting. Place the speaker on the now dry acrylic insert and drill holes for the securing screws or the bolts that I used. A bit of the matt black to the exposed items to hide them from view. The mesh cowling was replaced and secured with Araldite on the underside. You would not notice any changes.

Now the old speaker was a special build with a threaded hole for the securing bolt. Your replacement speaker will not have this feature. My speakers easily fitted into the space that was available, without having to remove the old metal fixing strap. Yours may be different so for the present I would suggest securing the improved unit to the parcel shelf in a way that is suitable for your speakers. Mine just sit in the old hole without any securing screws. The output is 160 watts on each and I have not experienced any distortion or buzzing. You may need to secure yours.

The front door speakers were replaced in a similar way. The door panel needed to me removed, slightly irritating at times but straight forward enough. The front speakers were angled slightly to give the front passengers a better listening experience! My replacements occupied the same space - my memory is slighty cloudy on exactly what I did - but it was much easier than the rear speakers.

I now have the sound quality that I need and the interior looks just the same.

I don't impose my musical preferences on people that don't want to hear it.

Thanks Landbarge. Looks like Ive got some head scratching to do.

Do you think that 6 x 9 speakers will fit? they seem to be rather popular.

Hi Paul,
The previous owner of mine did fit 6x9's but made a hash of it.
the parcel shelf cover was badly cut and looked a mess but more worryingly the steel shelf below that looked like a blind man had attacked it with a axe.
I did manage to tidy it up by covering the shelf with leather and refitting it.
The main problem with 6x9's is there is little to no space te get at the screws because of the rear window.
I had to bolt mine to the removable part of the shelf and then refit that.
If the previous owner hadnt made such a hash job I would have gone down similar lines as landbarge or built a fibreglass pod.
All in all probably easier to get some good speakers that will fit.

landbarge, that almost the same method as im doing with my speakers, except im using an aftermaket 5x7 speaker and upgrading the tweeter aswell

im writing a little tutorial thingy as i do mine so i'll post that up here for any one who wants it

Well I think that the standard speaker are not that bad the head unit is the weak link. In my Granada Scorpio I have fitted a Sony minidisc headunit and a 12" infinity sub powered by a 400watt kenwood amp, which sounds fantastic with the standard speakers. The speakers are the same as fitted to the scorpio, well they look the same as my scorpio cosworth.

but when you plan to install 2400watts of bass (me ;D) you need to upgrade the trebble and midrange as well as the headunit (sony mp3 from my other car)
