Title: Prop Knock
Post by mazzy_j on Apr 26th, 2006, 1:51pm
My Scorpio is a manual, and when i lift off the accelerator when changing gear it sounds as thought the prop shaft knocks. Its been doing this since i had it, its just annoying more than anything else  >:(

When i had the car up on ramps to change the gearbox oil a while ago, with the car in gear to lock the gearbox i found i could rotate the propshaft by hand easily a fair amount without it turning anything where it goes into the diff and the gearbox. when i rocked the prop shaft back and forth it 'knocked' the same noise it does when i'm driving around.

Any ideas what could be causing it?

Matt

There's  a  certain   amount  of    prop     " Backlash "    or freeplay   allowed   in the   drivetrain ,    too much  however  and   you you  do  get  a  clonk  on   overrun.

I think that must be whats happening with mine. I'll have a poke around for the doughnut later, is there anything that i could tighten up to reduce the backlash?

its in the middle of the prop, big black rubber "donut" if its excessivley worn, you will "splits" around it, normally running from bolthole  to bolthole.

it may not cure all the probs, but will help.
