Title: Forgetting the remote
Post by sector-9 on Apr 27th, 2006, 11:43pm
No, not me, the car!  Seems after it's been parked for a few days it 'forgets' the remote and doesn't respond to it.  Now I know that it shuts off the radio receiver circuitry after so long not being ran, but it's supposed to enable it again after the engine has run isn't it?

I parked the car up on Monday morning and by Wednesday night it was ignoring the remote.  I started the engine and let it idle up to normal temp (was checking the leak and EGR valve I'd fixed) - but it still doesn't respond to the remote.  This has happened before and I had to reprogram the remote last time and assume I will this time too.

It's not a major problem (the locks work fine with key), just an irritation.  Anybody any ideas?  The only guess I can come up with is that there's bad connection to the battery in the remote - in which case I'll try the batteries in the spare remote and use that.  Speaking of batteries, anybody know if I can get the torch key battery from anywhere other than FMD?

Batteries can be bought anywhere, Asda etc
CR2016 if i remember rightly

The remote will go out of sync with the car if it is pressed ten times or more while out of range of the car, meaning it will need reprogramming

Do you keep it in a pocket where it gets jostled about a lot?

hi there

this one ring a very distance bell.

as stated, pressing the remote can have the same affect.
is it something to do with the fuel cut off switch? or the the door module?
just can't remember the fix. or the member with the problem. danny_r? :-[

Thanks for the replies - didn't realise it could go out of sync and yes, it is kept in my pocket with loads of other keys and stuff so it could just be that.

Cossie_al and highlander, are we talking about the same battery?  The one I need is a small funny shaped battery with a lip on it for the torch in the key.  The CR2016 is a standard lithium battery as used in the remote, but that's not the one I need...

I've given up on crappy hit & miss remote.
More bother than it's worth as have to check that worked.
Hire car in States - tooted horn & flashed lights - remote also worked from over 100yds - now thats worth having!!
Just use key no big deal as never had remote before.

Thanks Russ, that's exactly the one I need.  Maplin don't do it which suprises me (though it shouldn't anymore - they don't seem to know which direction to go in).  Not sure where I can buy one from - as in high street store - I'll try the market tomorrow, and possibly Halfords.

Beginning to agree with you Dave; key works fine so why bother with the remote?

Hi - wrt to remote 'going off' after a few days: It does say in the handbook (p36)  "Warning! To save the vehicle's battery life the remote control system will be switched off after the vehicle has been parked for 150 hours."

You have to open it with the key (no choice) -  switching the ignition on/off will reactivate the remote system without having to reprogram the remote - given it hasn't been pressed more than 10 times!

It does also say that the frequency of the remote may be affected by amateur radios or medical equipment!
Regards, john d york.

Got a torch battery today from the nearest market - cost a quid so well happy.  As for remote, I'll have to see how it goes - if it continues to have the same problem then I'll transfer the batteries to the spare remote (they're only a month old) and see if that one does the same.
