Title: wander/floating at speed
Post by frank_m on Apr 28th, 2006, 1:12pm
A niggly problem.  Car is 2.9 Cosworth 95 plate. Just had successful MOT, but I get feeling of car is not gripping road at high speed and appears to move. I assume faulty wishbones or anti roll links would have been found on MOT. I have new goodyear tyres all round, new front and back shocks (Ford) . I disconnected the sensotronic plug underneath car and is marginally better for it.  I wonder could it be something as simple as tracking being out.  Also sorry to sound dumb, but are the radius arms the same as the wishbones and if not, could there be a problem there undetected by normal MOT tests. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Could be that the tyre pressures are too high or low??

Have you checked the fault finder page, scroll down to STEERING & SUSPENSION CONCERNS and that should give some more clues.

hi there

yes, worn wishbones can be missed at the MOT. most MOTer's allow a small bit of play in them, but the scorpio shouldn't have any (well, very, very little).

how are your tyre pressures? this can affect the ride as well.

Thanks for the reply mazzy_j

I should have said, I have tried all manner of tyre pressures including that recommended in handbook.

Thanks anyway.

Frank.

Could also be the rear wheel bearings which also give this kind of symptom.

Thanks to all so far for their imput - I appreciate any comment at all that might help.  The car has had new wheel bearings about 12 months ago so I'm hoping it's not that.  The previous shocks on the car when I bought it, were Monroe but I hated the hard ride.  I think I might get the tracking looked at, and then probably get the wishbones done. If I use the up to 50 mph it seems ok, so maybe for now it's town journeys until funds allow.  As regards maintenance, this is the most expensive car I have ever owned, and I have had quite a few. At the time of purchase I was toying with the idea of  the lexus ls400. Dearer to buy, but maybe cheaper in the long run, but that's a different story.
