Title: Keys Post by Vince on Apr 29th, 2006, 4:55pm Could somebody tell me if I have the right keys, and explain something to me? When I bought the car, it came with three keys. All three are black in colour- two of them have a small red square embedded in the end that you hold. I don't have a red key. Should I have one? (1998 2.3 Ultima) I am only using one of these black keys at the moment- will the other one (below right) work without being "set"? I don't really understand the relationship between keys and immobiliser. Also, I have a silly little key as shown below on the left. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d12/mitrabor/keys.jpg What is this for? I presume I can't use it to start the car or can I? I suppose the quick answer is "why don't you check and see" but I am a bit worried that I will somehow immobilise it and be unable to work out what to do next........... |

Title: Re: Keys Post by sector-9 on Apr 29th, 2006, 5:39pm The red patch on each of the keys is the 'chip' which deactivates the immobiliser when in close proximity to the ignition switch. Your car will work fine with just the black keys, however you need the red key to be able to program any extra keys you might have made. The small T-shaped key will open the doors, etc. but obviously not disable the immobiliser - you can use it as the master for getting additional keys cut (as you can't use it for normal driving it tends to stay with the documents so as not to get lost). Title: Re: Keys Post by Vince on Apr 29th, 2006, 5:57pm OK, well I haven't got a red key so I presume I can get one from Ford? Or is there a cheaper route? |

Title: Re: Keys Post by Simmo on Apr 29th, 2006, 6:07pm The later cars apparently did not have a red key. Hang on until Snoopy or one of the senior guys log on and I'm sure they'll advise. |

Title: Re: Keys Post by adowds on Apr 30th, 2006, 4:57pm I've just bought a 95 M Ultima 2.9, and it only has one key, an aftermarket non-Ford one. I got another (non-chip) key cut, and it only opens the doors. So, without any standard keys, red or otherwise, how can I get another key with a chip to start the car? Ford Dealer? Is there any other way round it? Hmmm. |

Title: Re: Keys Post by adowds on Apr 30th, 2006, 10:44pm Aye, I guess so! I used to have a Nissan 200SX and the owners club had an amazing forum, you could get anything answered in no time. This site is really good too, I'd be (even more) stuck without it... Cheers! Al |
