Title: Boot won't open
Post by adowds on Apr 30th, 2006, 5:07pm
I was out working on the car today, and the boot has stopped opening. 95 M Ultima 24v, I don't have a remote, but the boot used to open with a press of the barrel when the doors were unlocked with the key.

Any ideas?

What were you doing which may have affected the syste?. Check fuse 22 in the drivers side fuse box as this controls the door locking modules. The other thing to try is WD 40 in the lock as they sometimes stick inside the barrel.

does the barrel move in at all when you press it? it should, as Simmo says they sometimes seize up a little

Don't think I've done anything. I did the rear discs today, but it stopped working yesterday. The barrel does move, but the sort of electric unlocking thingy doesn't happen...

Will check fuse and see what's up. And give it a spray too - what the hell! Getting sick of crawling in through the back seats already!

Is there an emergency release mechanism inside the boot?

It's a saloon btw...

It could be a wiring fault. Look at this post which shows the problem site. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1125950554.

The way the boot electric opening mechanism works is to 'fire' a solenoid to push the release lever.  It fires once for each push of the lock barrel.  When I bought my car it wouldn't release at all except by using the key.  What had happened is that the barrel had some light corrosion on it's surface which made it stick in the tubular housing - consequently the switch to trigger the solenoid never got released!

You can test if this is the problem by using the key to pull the lock barrel out as far as you can and then, with the car unlocked, pressing it back in.  If the solenoid triggers then you'll need to dismantle the lock assembly and clean up the outside of the barrel.  I used wire wool then copper greased it.  It'll never be totally free and loose as there is a rubber seal near the outer of the tubular housing, but it needs to be free enough for the spring to push the barrel back out and release the switch.  If the solenoid doesn't fire at all then you'll need to check the switch for continuity when operated, fuses as mentioned, and (I think) there is a relay to operate the solenoid in the engine bay...

Hmmm. This sounds kinda likely - the barrel is pretty stiff, and there's not really a smooth motion when you press it - it does feel a bit seized.

I guess I'll have to wait until I get a remote to open the boot and get in to strip it down.

On a side note, isn't it weird there's no remote release inside the Scorpio? I was amazed I couldn't find one on such a fancy car.

Cheers Darren, top man!

You should still be able to open the boot using the key.  As for the remote release, the remote control will work from inside the car when the doors are unlocked!  }{

Nope, it doesn't open with the key at all. Can't get it open, full stop.

Put key in, turn, push key/barrel, doesn't open. When I bought it last week, it would unlock with the driver's door, then open with a push to the barrel.

I don't have a remote release - but have bought one off eBay, should be here next week.

Haha!

Tried the WD40 and gave it a wiggle, and it opened. Lock strip and clean now added to the job list...

Top work, thanks everyone.

No, he's skint.

It cost him a fortune to get rid of those millions of cans of WD39, 38, 37...
