Title: strange sqeeking noise from year
Post by glevum on May 6th, 2006, 9:12pm
my 97 scorp is making 2 strang squeeking noises coming from the rear of the car. one of the sqeeks starts as soon as the scorps in motion , then the other quite awful noise starts after 5 to 10 miles into driving. its not the brakes as i have just replaced all discs and pads all round thinking this was the source of the problem. i dont know if this problem is related but the fan constantly runs now when the engine gets warm or just a coincidence

the other day i heard a galaxy making the same 2 strange distressing noises......so not a scorp only problem.........any ideas anyone please........dont want main dealer to look at it yet as they seem to fix something completely unrelated and still leave the same problem in previous experiences!!!!!!    :-(

Which year? ;D

Seriously, it's likely to be the wheel bearing - mine did the same, only squeaked when it was hot, change it asap, it's the only solution.

I think the fan runs because the aircon defaults to on when the engine is started. Does it run constantly - or cycle on/off?

at the moment seems to run constantly, air con is always switched off. never heard the engine fan running in nearly 4 years of owning the beast

That squeaking noise sounds like a rear wheel bearing.Do not ignore it as the consequences can be disastrous!!.

just found a page on this website by Dave Richards on how to change wheel bearings and hub......BRILLIANT.

amazing how paying a tenner on internet connection where i get access to this ace site can save me hundreds in extortionate garage fees............thanks

Could have been loose as well. Mine started playing up as above a few weeks ago and I was seriously anoyed because I had the O/S done only a couple of months before (sqeel, crunch). When I took it to my guy it turned out both needed tightning up but were OK. Do not let it go on though, get them checked ASAP.

Mine makes a similar noise from the rear but only when moving from rest, I assumed it to be down to some part of the suspension so haven't had a good look at it...

There is another possibility for your squeek and that is the boot lock. There's a bar which the locking mechanism goes around to lock and this has a plastic cover over it which can wear through so that you have metal to metal contact. I solved the problem by wrapping insulating tape around mine... noise gone!!!

hi thanks for the reply, ive had a look at the lock, all seems fine. the noise is coming from the rear wheel area. the squeeking noise really does sound serious to a point where i dont want her indoors driving the vehicle. i was  going to do the bearings myself after seeing a page on this site by Dave richards, but after speaking to a mechanic today hes going to investigate tomorrow as it could be a cv joint. or a handbrake fault.  Its amazing how garages will automatically diagnose the bearings without even looking at the car at a cost of about £300 when it could be something else, especially main dealers :-(
