just been quoted £1374.oo +vat for this section of loom from fmdcar aint worth that

what do you get for 60 quid
which sections of loom - I assume from gearbox connections - thro' V of block to connection inside engine bay??

Surely you don't need the whole loom?! If you know where the damage is on the loom then cut out the affected wires either side of the damage and replace just those few inches. It doesn't matter what type of cable you use as long as it is flex (solid cored will break with movement from the engine), and the copper conductor is the same (or greater) thickness as the original.

For best results you should solder in the new length(s) of flex and use heat-shrink tubing to insulate, but crimp connectors will suffice as long as they grip tightly. Finish off by wrapping black insulating tape around the new section, overlapping the original by a few inches at each end.

The only exceptions where I would replace with genuine bits are the HT side of ignition system (plug leads) and the very thick wires between battery, starter or alternator...

Assuming you live in UK - Not death valley area!
If mine was getting so hot I'd be worried - to heat none connected metal areas so hot requires a phenominal ammount of heat to transfer throu' air.
As a stop gap measure why not cobble up a manually switched fan to ventilate engine bay as you must be cooking your electrics.
Wont solve root cause of problem but may help minimise damage due to it.
Is under tray fitted to engine?

the loom i have has had so many repairs it is now beyond any hope of repair. most of the insulation has crackedwhere the loom goes between the v. so need a loom new or secondhand. then im going to get an electrical firm to make a new loom that doesn't go through the v so keeping it out of any heat

Well you've identified where the damage is a repair is certainly possible. If you don't trust the existing loom then it's not much harder to cut it way back to somewhere you know is good and make yourself a complete new one from that point on - just remember not to cut the old loom too close to the connectors (which you'll need to re-use) make a note of what colour wires went where. Peel off the insulating tape from the existing loom and see if the wires join together or change colour anywhere - they sometimes do!

Yes I know it's a pain in the backside to have to repair or contstruct a loom, especially if access is awkward, but you've then got freedom to extend and re-route it wherever you think best. Also IIRC somebody quoted a FMD price for the engine loom as being several hundred pounds and highly likely to be supplied with the wrong one!

thanks for the info. my loom is beyond repair. hopefully i will pick up another loom thursday fron newcastle then sort it from there. i had the same problem with the water leak down to a split o ring poor designe. loom corroded and wires welded together. will take longer to sort that than get another secondhand loom and sort that one. thanks for your help.
