Title: Module
Post by Celesa on May 8th, 2006, 12:14pm
Hello everyone, as you guys know I had a starting problem with my scorpio after replacing the battery and were unable to trace the problem. I car had since been with my local ford dealer for nearly 2 months and finally I got a call today the module is dead and need replacing for a hffy £840!!

I agreed and they will get right to it. Does the module really cost that much??

Also does anyone know any place around York that does a good job (Cheap) on servicing my scorpio?

i would be surprised if a module cost as much as £840, of course, it depends on which module it is that needs replacing, many are located behind the dashboard itself, which will need to be removed to gain access.
so, i guess you will be charged for 4/6 hours labour, cost of the module, tests? storage? plus of course the taxmans 17.5%, totalling up to £840.

still seems a little pricey to me ???

I think actually that most of the modules behind the dash can be replaced quite easily by removing the glove box or the lower panel on the drivers side, so £840 seems very pricey to me >:(

Indeed, the engine control module cost £5xx, £3xx are for labour and TAX.

The part:

I should have look on ebay earlier!!! Arggggg

I am gonna ask them how much will it cost if I want them to programe me a new RED key since they are replacing the engine module which includes the immobiliser (They will have to re-programe something right?).

When I first hear it cost £8xx I nearly had a heart attack!

Hi,

There r lots of Scorpios bing broken on these pages why didn't u speak to some of these guys.

I have had loads of bits off Paulscorp & every bit has been sound.

The engine control module sits behind the glove box which is 2 minutes to remove.

It does not need programming the car only has to be driven for a few miles for it to self learn.

I know hindsight is marvellous.

Not sure why it would be the ECU itself causing the trouble - it'd be highly unlikely it's failed so totally that it is completely dead.  I know it's easy to blame the 'black box', but often it's unfairly done and I'd be interested to know how they arrived at that conclusion.  Presumably they tried running an OBD scan on it and it didn't respond; but that's more likely down to no power to the module, or a bad earth than the ECU itself.

Even if the ECU genuinely has a fault, it's probably nothing too serious and once located well within the capability of your local TV repair person.

Unfortunately by agreeing to have it replaced there's not much you can do now, but at least insist on keeping the original!

Just to keep you guys updated, got the car back today, everything is working now.

Instead of just replacing the module, they also gave me a new red key and two black keys (They also replaced the battery in my remote).

At last I have a red key!  ;D

How Much for the pcm?????
You shouldv'e looked on Ebay. They tend to pop up quite regularly & range from between £50 - £125.
I was lucky enough to be the only bidder on a 2.3 module a few months back & got it for the grand sum of a fiver!!

For the module alone is £500. With keys, labour and VAT, total £8xx.   :(

The module new from Fords maybe this kind of money. But second hand...it's what you are prepared to go to. Most sellers aren't that greedy because they know that nobody will pay the price that they really want.

Hi Celesa - no consolation but recently Polar Ford York quoted about £760 just to buy an ABS module - searched used Ford parts places on web and got one - exact match on part no etc - delivered for £50 from Rotherham Ford Spares.  Wasn't an urgent job so I could afford to wait - different if it is a problem that disables the car.  Typical FMD labour charge now about £70+VAT/hr (~£82) to cover costs etc.
