Obtained a new carkit Nokia 91. It has the option to mute the radio.

How do I connect this to the radio?

you need a seperate interface to do that

Connect the mute wire as shown on this diagram. You can get away with just pushing the wire into the hole in the plug as there is no cable there normally. You can however, get hold of an old plug and pinch a connector from that. The green/white wire above is the VSS wire which controls the speed sensitive volume!

Tried your solution and it works. However, when a call is coming in, the radio goes into "phone" mode but it does not switch back. Is the radio programmed this way or is there another solution.
