You could be  really unlucky  and the  faults you describe   have nowt  to do  with your kerb  bash   ( you did say it was fine on the way home )   and  would  have happened   anyway    ( such  is  the   way of  the  Scorpio :-/  )

Orrrrrrr,   if you're lucky  the  impact  has  dislodged  or   deaded    a  vital  component,   finding  the  offending  component being the tricky part.

vehicle speed sensor. its at the rear of the gearbox nearside 3 wires from it to a connector. speedo reads from as well as fuel computer also has part control of gear change.

UPDATE
the car has been in a transmissions place for the last two days they connected the test leads and came up with the codes for no vss and a code to do with the Turbine shaft !, the guy changed the vss but there was no difference so now he thinks loom problems which for £40 an hour labour he would start looking for the problem also for the other thing the Turbine shaft he says he has to strip the box down to replace it at a cost of about £500.00 +vat.
In the last 6 months I have replaced all disks and pads the rear wheel bearings, starting motor, new tyres gaters bushes you name it I have had it done, so after this big ex para had a  :'( I have decided to call it a day and scrap it I do hope landrover discoverys are more reliable because after 3 scorpios and 3 years thats me
Cheers all

hi there

did you look in the fuseboxes? i know you have the covers fitted, but maybe some rainwater was forced in with the impact.

when did the o/d light start flashing? after the impact?

Be a shame to scrap it when you've paid out so much already.  The loom isn't that complicated (if you've ever fitted a towbar or alarm you'll be right at home) and can be repaired.  You don't even need to know exactly where the fault is, just a good idea and replace that entire section!

If you really don't want the hassle then I'll give you £20 for it but you know you'd rather fix it and keep it.

Darren

P.S.

All cars are becoming more and more complicated due to ever increasing demands for emissions and economy - you've now got ABS, airbags, EGR and evap systems, cats and fuel injection - that's without the optional luxury items you can specify!  The Discovery is a nice car (truck?) but unless you're buying one that's only a few years old you're still going to get problems in time, and will you be any better equipped to fix those?

I'd certainly check the drivers side fuse box as it has no extra cover.
I made my own from thick plastic bag & duct tape - look terrible BUT it does the job.
Cannot understand why one not fitted as standard - my D regd Sierra had a purpose made one !! - unable to use it as too small.
It seems ridiculous that battery cover is "vital" yet there is nothing to main fuse box.
I'd check this for free before getting rid.
I''d give you a few quid provided it is drivable back home - where abouts in country are you.

hi just got my loom back from repair replaced all the wires and reinsulated it at a cost of £105. if you get the loom repaired the chances are all faults will go so no need to do any work on gearbox saving £500 + vat.the discovery is not a reliable vehicle and needs loads of money throwing at it all the time. dont forget the damaged loom is sending fault signals because it is shorting a common fault on the 24v.

Dear Deidre
What happens if I give the one I love one more chance by requesting her to have an auto to manual change at the powercraft hospital in devon, do you think she will forget about all the problems she has caused me with the speedo od etc.
Hope you can help me

sounds like its all down to the loom. just sounds like the signall is not getting through. i should check what is involved with the change to manual. i think its a lot more than a box change and a peddle fitting.  99% of faults on a cosworth are down to wireing.

Yep, I'm a retired auto box man with a cos estate, the faults you describe are in the loom probably near the plugs on osf inner wings.  Sod changing the gearbox to manual just get someone competent to sort the loom out, it will be far easier in the long run.

other place for the loom to go on a 24v is between the v on the heads

As others have said, it's highly unlikely to be the gearbox itself at fault if you managed to drive it for several hours afterwards.  Check the loom or pay somebody else to test it - it'll be much more worthwhile than changing to a manual (and you'll still need to sort the loom out for the speedo anyway).

Hi people I now feel a whole lot better about finding out what the problem is, I have spoken this afternoon to STN (bill) at powercraft and I am dropping the car into him tomorrow morning as he's only 25 mile away  ;D
I will up date when the problem has been sorted
Cheers

UPDATE....
The car has been expertly looked at and a full list of problems were listed, loom, gearbox, death rattle abs & tc problems to name a few. I was quoted a fix it all price and for the last few days I have been thinking in agony over what to do  :'( sadly I have sold the car to be broken and no more will I have a scorpio on the drive way, the love affair lasted through 3 scorps in 3 years now it,s finished. I,ve my eye on a 4ltr Ford Explorer so I,ll be looking out for a new forum in the very near future. Great site this and it,s been very helpful to me over the last 3 years keep up the good work.
Cheers all
