Title: rear shock absorbers estate
Post by henry123 on May 15th, 2006, 3:41pm
The bushes have gone, the mechanic says he can't replace the bushes.

I read a post once that said you can put normal shocks on instead of self leveling.

Can anyone confirm this as true.

I don't carry heavy loads so normal ones are fine.

Which parts should I look for if I can put normal shocks on? Same rear shocks as a saloon or do I need the shocks from older estate scorpio/granada model before they started putting self levelling ones on?

See below:

If you don't fit identical replacements make sure you pull out the fuse & relay for self-levelling suspension!

thanks but that thread doesn't really come to a definate conclusion.

the suggestion about a MK3 Granada does not make sense as over on the Granada Forums they all seem to be having the same problem:

I do know that the Sierra used a very similar rear sub-frame assembly as the Granada and I doubt much has changed (other than the anti-roll bar) between those and the Scorpio.  I had a Sierra estate once which needed new rear dampers and they passed through a hole in the wishbone with two bolts going up into it to secure the bottom and a single one at the top.

I haven't seen a Scorpio estate suspension setup but it's not hard to take a damper from a scrap Sierra estate just to see if it will fit.  If so you know what (non self-levelling) ones you can use to replace yours.

because I don't know what I'm doing.

There is a P-reg scorpio estate sat at the garage aswell. The Mechanic said the shocks aren't the same. So I guess they must be non self-levelling.

The scorpio is up for scrap so even if they are not identical (ref self-levelling) will they fit?

I would have thought so, what do you all think?

Latest:

I spoke to my local ford parts and told them about the sierra estate. Their computer system would not list any other part for the Scorpio but they had some sierra estate shocks on the shelve. They compared the pictures of the scorpio ones with the actual sierra one's on the shelve and agreed they do seem to be identical fittings compared to the pictures of the scorpio.

I have ordered a pair of gas rear shocks for a sierra estate. I will get the mechanic to check everything and make certain that they will fit. I will report back here with a definate answer. If they don't match up then I can take back the sierra ones and then I'll just bite the bullet and fit new ford self levelling.

hi there

that would be a great fix. quite a few people have had to scrap their scorpio's because of this.

please let us know how you get on. :)

The bottom end of the damper certainly looks the same as the Sierra estate ones, but I thought the Sierra had a horizontal top mounting (not vertical as on your photo)?  Maybe I'm wrong - it's been about 7yrs since I had the Sierra, but looking under my saloon last week I couldn't help but notice how similar the rear subframe was to the Sierra (non-estates of course).

If they don't fit then the ones on the other scrap Scorp estate should be fine.

Had a look under my Scorp last night; is it that the lower mounting bar isn't wide enough by any chance?

Funny if they did not fit.
I installed yesterday a pair of Sachs Advantage gas shock absorbers (originally for Sierra estate) as a replacement for the self levelling ones. No problems! :)
