Title: Black Smoke + Windscreen Washer
Post by leon on May 17th, 2006, 4:59pm
This may be of interest.

Last year my 2.3 1996 Auto Ultima developed a problem.
On longish journeys I would look in the mirror and suddenly see black smoke coming from the exhaust together with a smell of oil burning. This often happened when I was slowing down. Looking under the bonnet revealed nothing untoward and within a couple of minutes the problem disappeared. The temperature guage did also fluctuate somewhat.

Anyway, I put the car in to Dovercourt Ford who test drove it but could not get the problem to occur. However, they did find the temperature sender unit was faulty which they replaced but insisted this would not have caused the problem.

Guess what! since they replaced the sender unit I have had no more problems.

Whilst I am on, I do have an odd problem.

Everytime I use the windscreen washers there is a strong smell of Cats "Wee" in the car. Any suggestions?

Thanks

"Leon"

Tell the cat to stop p+++ing in your car...... ;D Could be that you have never let the bottle run empty but is lean on antifreeze which could cause a bacterial build-up in your bottle and pipes. Run it empty and run a small amount of anti-bac through the system, then refill with the right amout of water/antifreeze washer mix. Then run half of that through to make sure it is clean. If that fails, have a word with the cat as above ;D

Washing up liquid in the washer bottle is really asking for trouble. It form LONG Polymer chains when left standing and car completely clog the small bore pipes up .
Best advice clean the whole thing onut with warm water and then fill with good quality windscreen fluid at the correct strength.
