Right. So I replace the Central Timer Unit because mine wasn't chiming to change the remote, or at any point. Turns out the old one was screwdrivered in the chime part.

Why?

Because the new one chimes non-stop when I press the button to move from 'P' and stays on when the lever is anywhere but locked in 'P'.

This is going alongside my OD light flashing problems, gears not selecting, misfiring and general poor running. Also, the heated oxygen sensor fuse keeps blowing.

What do we think this all points to? I know loom damage is likely, but I'm struggling to find anything obvious like this. Next stage is to take off the inlet manifold to check the loom under there.

Any other ideas? Gearlever switches?

I'll get there yet with this thing...

(Oh, and genius on the part of the previous halfwit who attacked the CTM with a screwdriver to 'fix' the chime. These people shouldn't be allowed to own cars.)

The previous owner of my car has used Sicaflex on just about everything. So far I've found the fog lights, a vacuum tube and the master clutch cylinder glued tight.

For all those who don't know, Sicaflex is a silicone compund often used in the marine industry to seal things up for good. It is MUCH stronger than silicone, yet flexible, and there is no good way of removing it. Even carpet knives have problems against it. I have more than once wished I could show him what I feel when I have to use four hours extra to scrape Sicaflex off something.

On topic:

Have you tried an OBD-scan? Might help you pin point the problem, but yes, loom damage does seem likely.

Yep, OBD shows faults on the oxygen sensors, which ties in with the fuse blowing.

I'm guessing the O2 sensor fault wouldn't cause the chiming.

Could it think the drivers door is open ...that chimes if selector lever is not in P

I was thinking that David. The chime will go off if the gear selector is moved from park if the drivers door is open. In fact, it goes off as soon as the button is pressed so the CTM must think the drivers door is open. Does it show open on the doors open symbols on the dashboard?

No, doors are all closed, and there's no door indicator lit (they all come on when switched on).

What would the CTM diagnostic show up do you think Scorpioman? I did try it last night - hold heated rear windscreen button then switch on? I just got some chiming, can't remember what they were. Is there a guide to the chimes somewhere?

Incidentally, car is running worse than ever. Can barely engage a gear at all now, and it won't go over about 3mph.

It's also developed an intermittent starting problem now - the LED on top of the dash flashes rapidly when I turn on and it won't start. Switching on and off until the LED goes out allows it to start.

Maybe I'll end up screwdrivering stuff soon...

The flashing from the LED on the dash is giving you a code see PATS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm)

Went out and had another look, but there's no code. It just keeps flashing rapidly and doesn't go into a sequence pattern. Car turns but doesn't start.

Switching on and off until LED switches off gets it going.

More intermittent leccy problems. Reminds me of my old Kawasaki GPz550 in the 1980s. But with extra computers.

Hi,

I've got the problem of the alarm sounding everytime the gear selector botton is pressed but have found a way round it - turn the key to on but don't start the engine then press the gear selector button in and the tone will sound, keep the button pressed in while you sound the engine and the tone should stop and you're fine to select gear and off you go.

I think starting the engine resets the central timer or something.

As for what's causing it who knows but at least you don't get the noise.

Wow. Well I'll try that. It's better than ramming a no.1 Phillips into the wee buzzer.

Doe your car go okay otherwise? Is it a Cossie?

Mine barely runs at all now. I can't even reliably run it five feet forward and back to get into the garage. I'm dead busy at work just now so no time to work on it either. Next week I'll get the inlet manifold off and look at the loom under there.

Is this a big job? Just unbolt the octopus, disconnect cables/wires/hoses and lift off?

should take you about 30mins to 1hour to remove inlets from engine the loom runs under the injector rails so these will have to be removed aswell 4 bolts. this is the most prone area for the loom to go.

Had another fiddle tonight. Cleared all the fault codes with OBD and went for a run. It's running better now, but the bloody chime is driving me nuts. O2 sensor faults and O/D light flash are still there of course.

The chime stopped yesterday, but when I touched an interior light switch, it came back and hasn't gone away. Is there any link between interior lights and the chiming?

Very annoying!

Iirc, the interior lights are controlled by the central timer. (Should cut power to the lights if you leave them on for more than 20 minutes or so)

Except for being controlled by the same component, I don't see how they relate however.

Other members are probably more knowledgeable than me when it comes to internal electrics.

It makes me think there is a faulty door open switch. worth checking those.

Hi could it be the bonnet switch, they fail and open bonnet doesn't show on the dash warning lights.

The chime is related to the drivers door open switch.

Check all the conections, earths & wiring.
Sounds like something loose or a bad contact.
The display may not show the door open but the gearbox thinks it is by the sound of it.

Poor running is unrelated I think.

That's a different issue.

Aye. It's hard to imagine how the door switch can do one thing - make the chime - whilke not doing the other - lighting up the dash light. Particularly when the dash door display does light up and go out normally.

Does every door make the chime if open while out of park? I need to check them all if so I guess.

Only the drivers door activates the chime when out of park, none of the others, though I haven't checked if the bonnet being open does.

Bonnet switch on my car works fine (sets the alarm off if bonnet opened) but doesn't appear to be used by the CTM - it certainly doesn't make it chime on the diagnostic, whereas the four doors and boot lid do, as does heated rear window and wipers on intermittent position.
