Title: Ripped pipe
Post by km449 on May 29th, 2006, 6:39am
When doing the MAF today I noticed that the rubber pipe running from the top of the egr had ripped apart approx 2" away from the egr.

The car, a 2.3 97 P auto has been running sweetly except on motorway inclines where I though it might be a fuel filter problem.

I am wondering now whether this ripped pipe could be the problem. Can someone please advise.

For the time being I have simply taped the 2 parts back together but haven't had chance to check out motorway inclines!!

Possibly it could affect engine performace on a petrol because the vacuum used to operate the EGR valve is taken from the inlet manifold.  If the vacuum pipe is split then you've effectively got an air leak into the manifold which isn't being detected by the MAF so the mixture will be wrong (though the O2 sensor will detect this and try to compensate).  To confuse matters, the EGR control solenoid is in circuit so this problem will only happen when the EGR valve should be operating - at other times the solenoid will be closed so cutting off the leaking section of pipe.

Well, that's the theory anyhow!

Darren,

Thanks for that. It could certainly explain why I got the "problem".

Except under load the car is running well following a recent service but when "pushing on" it's been out of sorts.

I have taped the two sections together for now with copious amounts of insulating tape.

As the split occurred close to the EGR there is sufficient spare pipe to remove the short broken section at the EGR end and simply plug the remainder into the grommet.

Are there any difficulties you know about opening the EGR and do you know if there are any issues I should be aware of. Looks too simple!

I thought about simply removing the grommet from the EGR together with the short broken section, then doing the reverse with the unbroken pipe, but is it attached to anything inside the EGR itself.

Hope that makes sense!!

Thanks

If that is the problem then yes, I would expect the engine to run well under load.  The EGR solenoid only opens under light loading (and idle on the diesel).  Simple way to check is to pull off the hose multiplug from the EGR solenoid and plug the hose going to the manifold.  If the problem then disappears you know it is the leaking pipe causing it!
