Title: Diesel estate various problems
Post by Scorpio25TD on May 30th, 2006, 2:59am
Hi guys I'm new to the site, but have found many useful items already.

I've just got a TD estate, for the singer partner, and have started to bring it up to scratch.

Have fitted clutch etc and rear engine oil seal. And may have useful method for one-man gearbox re-fitting, more to follow.

The problems I have are:-

Occasionally it sounds even more dieselly than normal, after 20 mins over 70 mph. But after a 5 min stop sounds normal. I have replaced fuel filter in the hope it was blocked or water filled.

Oil change - I want to do a full service etc, but while changing clutch noticed there are several sump plugs on the sump. All look a bit battered, one looks like some one has used metal repair paste to seal it. Question will any one of the plugs drain the sump or do they all do summut different.

And now something completly different, well anoying anyway. The one or other of the ABS or Air Bag lights stay on for a few mins but never both at the same time (other than at self check), no flashing, obviously an MOT failure.

Finally for now, very small item but when loading music stuff in the dark I need the luggage light. The tail gate open warning works fine and the manual override works but the light will not come on when the 'boot' door is open. All other door delays work fine and wiring to the 'boot' lock switch is fine.

Any help with the above would be greatly appreciated. I have been looking foward to driving and enjoying Ford's finest large car since owning a Granda 4X4, which some inconciderate drunk wrote-off many yeas ago.

I can and will tackle any problem with cars, I have to I've had a Triumph TR6 for the last 20 years!!

I suggest you read this recent post re the sump plugs !!. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1145130783;start=0#0.  Also go to this page http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm. Scroll down to 'Braking Concerns' and 'Electrical Concerns' to see if that helps re the ABS and the Air Bag.  ABS problems are frequently due to dirty wheel sensors.

When I drain out the old oil I undo just the one plug, the other is all pasted up like yours. I suppose if you wanted to drain every last drop off oil out you would undo the 2, i just let mine drain for half an hour out of the 1.

When you say 'more dieselly than normal', when the alternator was failing on mine (battery would go flat whilst driving) it would suddenly get louder (kinda transit van like) and sound as though the exhaust was blowing. Pull over, turn it off, start it up, and it sorted itself out  ??? New alternator and never had the problem again.

Mine also tends to alternate between loud and very loud, and seems to settle down after idling for a while.  Wonder if changing to a lighter grade of oil might help?

I believe Ford modified the sump pan on the diesel at some point in '95.  Some types have two drain plugs, one in the centre of each of the two 'ears'.  Others, like mine, only have a single plug which is nearer the centre of the sump itself (yet still have castings in the ears to confuse you).  I think the trick is to look for a plug which is a different colour to the sump itself...
