Hi everybody newbie here, just bought '96 ultima cossie and I can't get any response from the cruise control buttons , anybody got any ideas ? Cheers Keith.

Are you using them correctly (sorry to ask but its best to check first :))

Press the white button top left then the plus or minus button

Yes, I've tried pressing all the buttons but as soon as I take my foot off the gas down goes the speed :'(

If it hasn't been used for ages the buttons may just be a bit "reluctant". A member on here had the same trouble and got his working by tapping them quite hard, then they worked normally after that!

All fuses ok? maybe a loose connection in the steering wheel? A lot of these cars have had the steering wheels removed at one time or another ;)

Make sure it has actually got cruise control fitted and doesnt just have the steering wheel with the buttons

Disconnect battery for ten minutes before removing the airbag though

Have you checked that the cable is connected to the throttle linkage?. There is a small plastic connector holding the cable to the throttle linkage and it is easily dislodged when working on the engine and they have been known to break.

You could check the relay which is situated in the pull down flap above the glove box. Also you could check to see that the plunger hasn't snapped off the green switch which is located on a metal panel just in front of the brake pedal (just below the brake light switch). I recently broke this on my scorpio whilst removing the brake pedal & my cruise wouldn't work.

I had an erratic cruise control, then the airbag warning light came on, then later the horn died. Eventually, traced all problems back to the Clockspring. A small 'arm' of plastic snapped off in the clockspring unit allowing a crease in the mylar ribbon to develop. Over time the various 'tracks' failed which gave me these problems.

Always think smallscale and simple with car problems. If, eventually, you are sure it is the clockspring, then replacement is straightforward and cheap - Clockspring from Ford Dealer was just over £40, cheaper than the Link Rod I needed for the suspension.

Hallo Keithj,

have a look at the brakelight.

If both bulbs were gone the cruise control does not works.
