Title: Humming noise
Post by Paulus on Jun 5th, 2006, 7:26am
I have developed a humming from my rear end  :o

When I get to about 30mph, I can hear it clearly, the faster I go, the louder and high pitch the hum goes.

Does this sound like a wheel bearing? I doesn't get any louder/quieter on the bends.

If it does turn out to be a wheel bearing, how dificult are they to change. Is it best left to a garage to sort? I am handy with a spanner, but haven't got much spare time.

Sounds like wheel bearing.

Could be the bearings but it could be they need tightning up rather than they are on their way out. Mine used to do the same running up to 50mph until I got them done. 10 min job.

Check the oil level in the transmission, I had the same sound. The oilseal where the propshaft goes in did leak
oil so the oil level was to low!

It could be be the diff

Yes the diff is maybe low of oil!

What type of oil does the diff use and how do you check the level?

Hypoidoil SAE 80-90 I think, Take the oilfillplugs out and look if the oils drain out, If not ,Fill to the oil comes out from the hole! Hope you understand what I meant.

If i remember corectly the differential uses SAE 90W oil, and the gearbox uses 75W-90.

I think my scorpio is also producing that hummming noise but at speed over 75 mph and when accelerating a bit harder in 5-th gear  :-/

If their is no evidence of oil leaking from the diff.. i.e. oil sprayed on chassis & suspension, then the oil level is probably ok.
If this is the case then it is more likely the diff is on the way out. That's if it is the diff that is humming.

I'm going to try to jack up the back end tonign to give the rear wheels a wiggle to see if there is any play.

If it does turn out to be a wheel bearing, how difficult is a DIY replacement?

Not too hard, but reasonably time consuming as the bearings fit very tightly over the hub.
The way I got them off & the new ones on was to put the hub (with old bearings on) & the new bearings in the freezer over night. The next day the old ones came off with a bit of tapping & the new ones tapped on quite easily. Be sure to try & do it as quick as you can otherwise the hub will warm up again & then it will nigh on impossible to get the new bearings on without a bearing press.
Also be sure to use a new locking hub nut & do it up as tight as possible..i.e..using a breaker bar with a scaffold pole on it!! ;)

It looks like it's the diff.  :'(
I jacked up the back end last night and both wheels are secure - no play whatsoever.

Is it better to drain the diff before re-filling, or should I just top it up. Bear in mind that it has got over 150K on the clock. that means that, potentially, the oil is that old.

It wouldn't cost a fortune to try first changeing the oil to the diferential. A 10 year old oil with 150 k mile i don't think it's got the right lubrication properties.

There's more...
Whenever I put my foot on or off the gas, I hear a clunk from the rear end. Would this be some kind of cush drive that has worn out? Could this be related to the hum?

The clunk does sound diff related..i.e..worn splines. Or it could just be that the prop shaft bolts have worked loose, I know that there was a Ford recall concerning these bolts.

hmmmm. What's wrong with the bolts? Too short? wrong material?

Not sure what the problem was, just rememeber a recall about them.
Best thing to do is check them for tightness anyway, at least it won't cost anything. :)
