Title: Head gasket and rattle Post by BrianL on Jun 16th, 2006, 11:21pm Hello. The head gasket has gone; it's a 2.9 Cosworth, M reg. I can't do it myself, a local Ford dealer didn't even want to quote for this but a small garage is going to repair it, quoting £500-£600. The engine has done 96,000 miles and since about 80,000 miles it's had a startup rattle. The rattle hasn't got any worse so I had decided not to do anything about it to save the money. I'm spending too much on repairing this car. But as they are replacing the gasket, is this something that can conveniently be fixed at the same time? Thanks for any help. |

Title: Re: Head gasket and rattle Post by sector-9 on Jun 16th, 2006, 11:50pm I think the V6 engine has a hydraulic timing chain tensioner which can cause a rattle during the first few seconds of engine running. As the heads have got to come off then so will the timing chains anyway so it shouldn't be much extra work to fix. Somebody with experience will be along shortly I'm sure... Darren |

Doing this will make the engine like new. The chain rattle it's a sign of wear, in time the period it rattles will increase......till finnaly (but verry rare) it snaps and brakes the engine. I also recomand a pre-luber system, it will keep your engine in tip top condition and it will avoid the wearing of the new chains. |

Title: Re: Head gasket and rattle Post by martin_rowe on Jun 17th, 2006, 8:28am 5-600 for h/gasket on 24v, be very wary, think more like at least double for a proper job. would be advisable to do chains & guides at the same time, dont forget to remove the sump to clean the strainer befor starting engine. |

Title: Re: Head gasket and rattle Post by bizzay1 on Jun 17th, 2006, 8:36am As stated above about price - does the guy realise it's a 24v ?? as I paid £550 to have my hg done on a 2.3 (I also had 2 garages turn the job down before I found someone who would do it) |

Title: Re: Head gasket and rattle Post by howiedintheplace on Jun 17th, 2006, 9:11am At a garage to do the timing chains & gaskets it's easily £1000+ It has to be someone who knows what they are doing & are prepared to take some time doing it. Why do they think the gaskets have gone? Not because of a ballooned rad is it ;D |

Title: Re: Head gasket and rattle Post by BrianL on Jun 21st, 2006, 2:10pm Thanks for the help on this. It's made me think again about getting it repaired. It sounds like I could end up paying more for repairs than the car is worth ... again. Brian |
