Title: Shakin' all over....
Post by Paulus on Jun 19th, 2006, 4:06pm
I think my power steering pump on my cossie is on its way out. :-/

When I put the steering on full lock (either way), there is a squealing sound and the engine starts to shake. The squeal isn't the belt, I think it's bearings. I have bled the system and it is fully topped up.

Time for a replacement or is there something else I am try.

Paul.   ???

I believe there is a relief valve (in the steering rack) which should open at full lock to take some of the pressure off the pump?  If this has failed the pump will be sapping huge amounts of power from the engine (which is only running slowly at a guess) and causing the shuddering.

Well, that's a guesstimate anyway.  Not sure how you'd prove it though.  Also, some cars had a switch in the power steering hydraulic line to increase engine speed/power when the system was under load - might be worth checking if yours has this and if it's working.
