Title: humming noise
Post by tony on Jun 19th, 2006, 7:34pm
On a 300 mile journey recently, the car started making a humming, droning noise. I presumed it was the offside rear bearing - I'd already replaced the nearside one. So I replaced the offside one too, but the noise is still there.

So I'm now suspecting it's the offside front bearing. The noise starts at about 30mph, and increases pitch with speed. If I go around a right bend, it stops completely and the restarts when I straighten up. My thinking is that on a right bend, weight is transferred to the left, taking the strain off the right bearing. Does this sound plausible? Anyone else experienced something similar?

Cheers, Tony

Feared as much.

Are the front bearings do-able without a press or special tools? Anyone done them?

Is it easier to replace the hub with a s/h one maybe?

great big nut on the hub and you need a press to fit them plus the bearings are not cheap.
