Title: pinking
Post by pedropedro on Jun 20th, 2006, 8:35pm
i have a 2.3 ultima which pinks when hot ..using premium fuel
any ideas how i can resolve..only error is a p0171 which is running lean,,,,, no idea why this is showing... no air leaks maf is good

can anyone throw light on this..have disconnected battery to clear stored tables etc..had new leads / plugs fitted

hi-only things i can suggest are, check the air tempature sensor and engine temperture sensor,as they have bearing on fueling and timing. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/iatdata.htm

I've recently had the same problem on my 2.3 & someone on here suggested taking the thin plastic pipe off the EGR and plugging it.
This seemed to work but within a day I noticed it pinking again, so I'm still no closer to solving the problem.
It definately isn't the engine temp sensor as I have a new one in mine.

Could be low fuel pressure at the injector rail?  The engine will pink if the mixture is too lean and obviously the ECU is aware of the problem (so O2 sensor must be working).  Would suggest something the ECU isn't capable of adjusting to compensate...

thanks for ideas...I suspect the fuel pressure is low or maybe the filter clogged .....not sure how to get to fuel line to check pressure.......think next step get someone to check fuel pressure and maybe change filter

will let you know when checked

Pedro,
Unless the fuel filter has never been changed, it is unlikely to be bunged up enough to starve the fuel pump without you hearing it, and OBD would record a DTC if the pump is drawing too much of a current - so it's most likely to be the FRPR - (Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator.)
Have a look at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelrail.htm - the 16V ones are not too difficult to change.

You have the opposite problem to Vlad on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelreg.htm - his was running too rich, yours is too weak. This is discussed in detail on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/obd2scan6.htm

yep, i have the opposite problem, i think, i have ordered a regulator from fordpartuk £49 for the 24v version, which i am hoping to have fitted end of next week. am expecting 4hrs labour charge.....

car runs fine, MAF fine, no obvious air leaks, but scan showed LTFT well into negatives (and maybe 2 blown cats  :( ), starting when hot is getting more and more difficult, have to pump the gas to get it going sometimes.

Eric

tks for comments...the filter has never been changed 96k miles on clock. car also has less than perfect idling unless there is a ltft of a few % added  ie if i put a/c on that cures idling roughness. if the trims goes to zero idlling in neutral is bad but  in drive ok
idle valve and maf ok.......maybe pinking issue related.....would there be any other symptoms if fuel regulator was bad ???

Pedro,
I would change the fuel filter - it's quite easy and not expensive and was due to change at 60K miles, so it's overdue. Have you checked for DTCs using an OBD lead? The fuel pump has a smart driver that will record a DTC if the pump is working too hard to draw fuel - but it's powerful enough to pull petrol through Nora Batty's drawers.

The pinking itself is a strong indication that the fuel pressure is wonky - the engine should never be starved of fuel so that it pinks - and this could do some damage if you run it for too long - local overheating and burning valve seats etc. Switching on the AC compressor changes the fuelling and timing to compensate for the extra load and this enrichment evens out the idle.

Tintin, 4 hours seems a bit excessive. Even with the 24V it should not take as long as that. Have you thought of following Vlad's advice on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelreg.htm and diy? This saves a lot of time and expense in dismantling the inlet system.

Eric
yes i have a lead ..I am using  a gendan scanner .....i did have a bad o2 sensor and changed that ..the enrichment at idle is zero and goes up to plus 25% at 1000rpm.
i also got alex peppers lead and same code comes up p0171
no others......i just changed to using optimax fuel pinking almost goes but if you blip the throttle a few times in quick succession you can hear the pinking..and i suspect i cant hear the pinking anyway at speed due to background noise.....i have ordered the fule regulatir and filter so will change ..tks for advice
tks  for help

if the regulator valve were stuck low would this affect performance because my car is running fine otherwise

(sorry to hijack, pedro)

Hi Eric

thought about it, but car is used daily, i dont have a garage, other things needing fixing as well, and i know a guy that does good work for low labour costs. Going on hols on wednesday, so thought i would just get this sorted whilst away. 4 hrs is my estimate, hope the garage can do in less !! back from hols, car runs a dream (or am i being optimistic  ???)

;D

PS my car drives brilliantly, just eats petrol in town, has trouble hot starting and registers error codes !

Just sorted out my pinking. It was the fuel rail pressure regulator.
Not wanting to shell out £40 for a new one from Fords I went down the scrappy & found one. I took it off with the fuel pipe still connected (impossible to get off). I showed it to the scrappy owner & he didn't really know what it was, so he said give me a couple of quid.
I've just fitted it & taken it for a run...no pinking...lovely.
Well done Eric for the advice.

Excellent, Jonnycab - glad you're sorted.

Pedro,
The Fuel Trims can make up for most of the lack of fuel, by using longer injector duration, but only to a point. The engine may seem to run okay, but at periods of highest demand, not even the Fuel Trims can make up for the low fuel pressure, and the fuelling is weak - hence the pinking.
When you've sorted the FRPR I suspect you'll feel a difference, even though it seems to run okay at the mo.

Eric

thanks... Iwill get the fuel regulator changed this week and hopefully it will resolve the problem
