Managed to find out how to boost the car's performance a few days ago. Was kinda needed as up until then the diesel had been quite disappointing considering it's capacity. Now it's actually a pleasure to drive rather than having to drag every last lame donkey out of the engine (I can't really use the term 'horse-power' as it didn't have any).

So far it seems to have made little difference to the fuel consumption (still getting around 60 miles per gauge marking), though there is more smoke noticeable in the headlamps of the following car at night, and possibly slightly quieter but this could be my imagination.

For anybody with the early diesel (i.e. the one with the throttle cable) that wants to try this, look under the 'give advice section' for the procedure. It does beg the question though: is my car typical and they're all set conservatively, or has mine been tinkered with in the past?
