Got a problem with my 1995 2.5 tdi scorpio please help!!
It all started with the instrument needles shooting round and then dying for a couple of seconds before returning to normal. This has now evolved to all needles dying a few seccond after driving off , after swotting up on fault finder page i decided to check aux fuse box for damp and to find out what the funny fizzing noise was!
To my horror it was inch deep in water DOH!!
So i took it out dried it thoroughly with hair dryer wiped it down and sprayed it with wd40, also cleared drain hole (which seemed clear?) After reffitting a few gremlins have dissapeared but not all.
The needles still die on driving away but if i dip the clutch and operate a switch eg window the needles come back, this is also the case when parked up if i press the brake pedal and press a switch the needles work? i don't know what to try next .
It has a battery cover by the way.

My guess is you need to completely dry and rebuild the fusebox

there is a chance even that won't cure the problems, so you might need to start looking on ebay and the parts for sale section for a new used one. (This is probably your safest bet, but I'm sure someone with more experience will say their two pennies worth soon)

Let me know if you need a replacement battery fusebox - I have a nearly new one for the diesel not being used.

Hi Darren thanks for reply have tried to dry fuse box but think its had it!
How much do you want for your fuse box ?
is it compatable with my 95 2.5 tdi ?

Sorting the Scorpio fusebox is very much like making love to a beautiful woman. You have to remove it gently but firmly and peel away all the different components.

You’ve got to clean and dry all the relevant surfaces, spread them out on the table, cover them with grease, and stick them back again.

Then you clean your rag, light your pipe, stand back and admire your handiwork

I did strip and clean fuse box which is not a quick job, but to no avail. Still the same problems in fact the car now sounds like a tractor and is'nt pulling well at all :'(
Don't know what to try next?
I didnt cover the parts in grease would this make a difference or should i just bite the bullet and buy a new one? ???
Does anything spring to mind electrical that would affect the running of the engine?

Tony,

where are you in the UK? There are countless electrical components which would make the car run roughly from a dodgy plug lead or plug to a sensor somewhere. I have the FDS2000 which would identify the fault (as much as a Ford dealer could anyway!)

Hi BAZ i live in Plymouth but travel to parents once a month in Sheffield up the m5/m42.
I take it fds2000 is diagnostic kit? is it expensive?
Iam determined to sort this myself an not get ripped off by a garage ;D

If you unplug the fuel pump relay (green/purple thing in the battery fusebox) then this will cause it to sound like a tractor though it will still run (it controls pump timing advance mechanism). This relay is switched by the diesel ECU behind the glovebox - if you pull the top off the relay then IIRC it is the bottom relay which closes to quiten the engine. Of course, this assumes that you've reconnected all the multiplugs underneath correctly and have refitted all the fuses and relays removed as some which would appear to be used only on the petrol engine also do the diesel ECU.

So, in order of liklihood, pump relay, fusebox multiplugs, power to advance solenoid on pump, power output from diesel ECU (pin 41 or 42, can't remember).
