Just got back from cornwall. It took 8 hours due to roadworks, accidents(not me fortunately!) and the good old M25. The old girl took it in her stride except for a heart stopping few moments on the M4 at high speed. The temp guage flicked down to zero, and a couple of minutes later returned to its normal mid way position. This happened twice during the trip and I pulled in to the services to investigate but everything under the bonnet was fine. I can only assume that it was an electrical glitch. Has anyone had a similar experience or has any info on this? Cheers. Freddieboy

Hi Buddy.

When I bought my Scorpio in March this year, we had the exact same problem with the temp gauge.
I was halfway to Honiton one day when the gauge started to do this 'drop to zero, and then go completely off the scale business. Needless to say I dived into the nearest lay-by, but all was fine, and the water levels were all OK.

to resolve this, and also disconnected and reconnected the battery (which does the same thing), and I'm pleased to say that the instruments have all settled down to proper readings now.

There is also the possibility that you may have a dodgy solder joint :

It's worth changing the temp sender, it only costs £8, easy to change, you don't even lose any coolant when you remove the old one.

If it is a 2.3 then you will lose about 1.5 to 2 litres of coolant when you take the temperature sender out :)

Thanks for all the help lads. It is a 2.3 and I had a new sensor fitted last year, when I had a radiator split which was due to a blown fuse on the N/S cooling fan. Naturally I`m a bit paranoid (£360 for a new rad as opposed to 10p for a fuse!)
I checked everything yesterday after the engine had cooled and everything looked ok water level fine etc.
I`ll just keep a close eye on it on my next run.

Have had a 2.3 for 30 months and it's always had a fluctuating temp guage. Will often stay at min for weeks only to then have a few days when it functions normally. It's slightly annoying at times seeing the needle move from half to min then back again whilst driving but someone told me on here it was a solder problem.
