I have just located the oil leak on my 2.3.
It is dripping from the bottom of the lower timing chain cover. I've tried tightening the bolts (not too much) but that hasn't helped, so obviously it needs a new gasket.
My question is:-
Is it possible to fit a new gasket without removing the crank pulley?

hi-think you would struggle as the pulley tapers at the rear,which would limit access and the chance of damaging the crank seal and the new gasket putting it on ,not saying it would be impossible,but would be a lot quicker and easier to take off the pulley to do to job proper.IMHO

Oh well....I suppose I kinda new that taking the pulley off was the only way. But I thought I'd ask anyway.

I need a pulley puller now, another tool to go in the box marked;- 'will never use again'.

Many years ago my friend and I replaced a sump gasket on an old Granada by loosening the bolts, cutting the new rubber gasket with a sharp knife so we could feed it in, put a dollop of liquid gasket on the join and tightend it all up.

Worked a treat and depending on the cost of the gasket might be worth a try.

Jonny,

You tried to tighten up, but a short term / possibly long term fix depending on how bad the leak may be to drain of sump slack of cover as much as you can, dry off area and apply liquid gasket to existing one let it start to set and then retighten.

Not sure how much room you will have and depends where leak is but may be worth a try.

I've got to do an oil change next week so I might try to re-seal it then.

P.S. I saw the price of crank pulley removers on Ebay & was thinking it would probably be cheaper to book it in the garage.

I think you can hire them from MOST hire shops . or try Machine Mart.

When I change the oil I'll have a good look at it before I decide what action to take. The reason being that it had a new engine a few months before I bought it (Feb this year) & there were, I noticed, a few bits here & there that were'nt fitted/tightened properly. It could be that the gasket may have been misaligned? ::)
