I was doing some work under the bonnet of my '95 Cosworth estate the other day when I noticed something strange. There is hose, I believe called a vent hose, from the coolant expansion reservoir very near the cap but on this vehicle it leads to... nowhere! :-/
It just hangs down into the engine bay. I cannot find anywhere it may connect to. It seems strange as in other cars I have owned this kind of overflow hose connected to near the thermostat housing. The car seems fine and coolant level and temperature is fine. I was wondering if this is the same on your cossies or should it connect somewhere? It is a thin hose about 15mm or so diameter.

It's the same on my 16v atleast. I'm 90% sure it's supposed to be this way.

hi-24v should have 3pipes from expansion tank 1 to radiator 1 to engine and the last 1 to atmosphere(the loose 1) all other engines only have the 2 pipeswith 1 of them to atmosphere /loose. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/technical.htm ( i dont have a24v)

Yes that it's correct, one pipe leads nowhere, first time i saw mine it gave me the creeps ;D

It's the overflow pipe - to stop you getting anti-freeze mix all over the paintwork and thrown around the engine bay!

Having said that, I've only seen overflow pipes on the old style coolant tanks with a metal bayonet fitting cap...

hi sector9-same thing .hole in neck to let pressure out when valve in cap lifts,thats progress for you ,but in plastic LOL.stan

shame it dont let the pressure out when a 2.3 head gasket goes,& splits the inlet manifold, still thats progress!! & my 2.3 hose is the same..............

It let the pressure out when the gasket went on my 2.0 16v???

Was a pool of oily water underneath the car when I drove off...

That's what I don't understand: the old bayonet caps had a seal underneath which pressed against the top of the neck, sealing it off from the outside world. There was also a spring-loaded pressure relief valve with a rubber seal on it attached to the cap. This sealed against the inside bottom of the filler neck. When the pressure rose it lifted this seal off it's seat and forced air/coolant into the neck and out down the overflow pipe - the top of the neck was still sealed.

Looking at the new screw on caps, they still have the top seal but the valve no longer seats in the filler neck. Instead, overpressure lifts the valve and lets air/coolant through, round the top of the cap seal and down grooves cut into the cap thread. As the filler neck is not 'airlocked' it is at the same pressure as the cooling system. So... the overflow pipe cannot connect to the neck otherwise no pressure could build up in the system!

Might help if I saw a photo of the tank and underside of the cap, but certainly on all the systems I've seen it wouldn't work. 8)

hi-as mentioned there is a hole in the neck,look when you take the cap off. which connects to the hose,and the valve is in the centre of the cap,which has 2 slots to le pressue out,so it doesnt flow past the threads,unless your cap is not working ???.if i change my name will you believe me new name fred :P.

Okay I'm wrong. Never seen a cap like that - certainly not on my diesel or any other Ford I've worked on! Still, I can see from the photo that it does seal against the bottom of the filler neck so the overflow pipe would work fine.

Learn something new everyday eh? Does mean you can't just substitute a cap from a different Ford though...

Any body know at what psi this cap opens @ then? (all this from a loose hose)!
