Title: Strange gearbox behaviour
Post by aleosa on Jul 20th, 2006, 12:36pm
Just when I thought everything was alright......  >:(
I think it is a gearbox/ electrical related problem. I'll try best I can to describe it, sorry its a bit long. The car (95 Cossie) is perfectly driveable and the tranny fluid is nice red and smells fine, the level is good too. However the O/D light flashes all the time, even when stopped.

The main symptom is when driving at around 35 - 45MPH and in third gear (always in third gear) of auto box there is a sort of shuddering... not so much cattle grid but more a yoyo as if the lockup clutch keeps trying to engage and then let go many times. Feels like doing bunny hops at 40MPH! Worse when throttle is halfway rather than not much open or very open. Also the gearbox often changes up a bit early leaving me cruising at 30MPH at 1000RPM, which seems a little low (with accelerator half way). It will kickdown fine but gearchanges in general feel a little harsh. Funny thing is in any other gear it will drive fine and in Overdrive above 55MPH it will happily cruise for hours without a hiccup.

I tried disconnecting battery and reconnecting after an hour etc, I checked fuses/ relays, I also cleaned MAF and checked wiring looms to, from and around the large multiplug blocks on OS of engine (but not in the V of engine back to gearbox). I intend on getting this code read and checking the loom back to gearbox but am I missing anything? Has anyone had this problem with their vehicle and point me in right direction? I'm d**ned if I'm gonna take it to Ford so they can charge me an arm and a leg to tell me nothing.

Thanks for reading.

Hello

I'm not an expert in automatics, but the OD light shouldn't flash

As for rought changeing, and wierd RPM you could clean the MAF, from what i know it has a big effect over the gearbox.

Also consider the throttle position sensor.
