Title: Indicator fuse keeps blowing
Post by dingo-virgin on Jul 25th, 2006, 4:47pm
I have checked the wiring where ever i can but not found anything obvious yet. When I change the fuse, it either blows straight away or within a day of driving.

I dont think it could be any of the bulb carriers as the hazards are not fusing anything. I've checked the plug at the back of the indicator switch. The big multi plug next to the fuse box looks OK

Any ideas where to look next?

(2.0l 16v ghia estate P reg)

thanks

Which fuse blows?.  Fuse 14 covers tail lights and brake lights  as well as indicators.Fuse 45 covers the hazards alone. Could you have a problem with the rear lighting units leaking ?. There is also the relay R29 adjacent to the steering column to consider.

Yes it's number 14 that keeps blowing.
I'll have a look at the rear lights

thanks

back lights look OK,

clean as a whistle and no signs of water getting in

just blown 2 more trying to find the fault.
one blew after ignition being on a couple of minutes the next one blew the moment i turned the ignition on.

had a look inside the relay and that's OK and works for the hazards.

Everything is quite hot inside but it is 32 deg!

If you only get as far as turning the ign. on & have not switched any lights on or brake lights then the wiring & rear lights are probaly ok. try unpluging the indicator stalk plug as the next easy job

A bad bulb can also blow fuses - had it this week in a caravan - bulb looked fine but kept blowing 15A fuses (it's only an interior lamp bulb!).  We checked it with a meter and it had a resistance of 0.6 ohms which works out at drawing 20 amps!

When the fuse blows, do the hazards still work normally?  If so then I doubt it's related to the indicators unless you have an aftermarket alarm which can flash them.  The only other thing I can think of is an internal short in the switch assembly but I think this unlikely.
