well the battery is now working ok all on its own.
But the heater battery light did not show on the instrument panel when starting and is a problem to start so had plugs changed but did not make any difference any ideas please.

do you have 12 volts to the plugs when you turn ign. on ? can you here the relay time out ? the glow plug relay sounds like the next place to look .not sure of its location myself though

It's relay IV in the battery side fusebox. Here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook132.gif.

Nope - that's the fusible link for the glowplugs  ;)

The relay itself is below the air filter housing, clipped to the inner wing, however it is switched by the ECU behind the glovebox which decides pre-heat time based on engine temperature, etc.
