Title: Air Con - Seized compressor
Post by Chris Dean on Jul 28th, 2006, 1:31pm
After all this hot weather I thought it time that I found out why the Air con is not working.

After a short investigation I found that the compressor has seized completely and the previous owner had replaced the drive belt with a shorter one for a car without Air con. My Scorpio is a '98 saloon 2.3 16V. What is the likely cost of a replacement compressor (reconditioned, scrapped etc)?

Your thoughts please.

Cheers

Chris

I got my compressor for £40 including postage, which was a tenner, off another member on this site (pinxton pete). It's still going strong :)

My old compressor was beyond economical repair. When I took it apart, I noticed that the angled wheel (don't know what it's called) that makes the 5 pistons go up & down had melted onto one of the pistons, & there was rather alot of metal debris from it covering everything inside.
That must have made one hell of a racket when it seized (before I bought it).

In case you don't already know, the compressor part number for the 2.3 is :-
   96GW - 19D629 - AA

Good luck :)

My air con seized, lots of smoke from under the bonnet, all jumped out for fear of fire! didnt respond to just switching it off had to cut the drive belt to continue journey. Life without aircon was okay in Winter!!!

I too have a 1998 2.3. My compressor seized and melted the drive belt. :'( I fitted a shorter belt to get the car home, and to give me some time to make a decision. ??? It was going to be quite costly to repair, and so I left the shorter belt on! I certainly gained on fuel consumption :D and with the sun roof open I haven't missed the air con too much.

I must add that I was lucky as it was only the compressor that had seized. The pulley wheel was still fine, so had no belt problems. But I was also unlucky in the fact that when I bought the car, because the belt was going around fine I had no reason to suspect that the compressor was seized, & I didn't bother testing the air-con as it was the middle of winter. ::)
