There are three separate double-sided coils which fires two plugs each.  Your problem sounds like a duff crank sensor which tells the ECU the engine speed and also feeds the rev counter on the dash.  An oscilloscope and multimeter is the best way of testing the sensor but the dash diagnostics will provide a quick confirmation.

Start the engine and hold in the trip counter reset button until all the digits on the display are shown.  Each press of the button then will move onto the next screen.  Keep pressing the button until you see the one that says "pulses" and watch the numbers at the bottom.  For the first second they may read in the thousands but should then stabilise at a fairly low number such as 60 at idle.  If you gently rev the engine the number should increase in proportion with engine speeds - if it jumps by a lot or seems to vary wildly then it could be the cause of your problems.
