Title: Electrical, front windows & mirrors
Post by MattsF on Aug 13th, 2006, 12:27pm
I bought a Scorpio (Cosworth) a few weeks ago & now I have got the following problems:

1. Front door windows don't go up or down using the switces. They only move when using the key, i.e. keeping it in locked (unlocked) position long enough will close (open) the windows. Rear door windows work when using the switches in the rear doors.

2. The mirrors cannot be adjusted.

Everything was working when I bought the car except for the remote key.

Soon after buying the car the radio died (not original radio). I noticed that I had voltage in the cord to the radio which always should be "energized" but not in the cord that is "energized" only when turning the key to right position. With a jumper (from "energized" to "not energized" I tested that the radio was working. At the same time I got a beep from the car's "internal alarm" and later I noticed that the windows & mirrors were not working.

So, what did I destroy when using the jumper?

I'd be grateful for any assistance on this topic.

P.s. I'm suspecting I lost the radio after trying to activate the remote key using instructions on this site but I'm not sure.

Can't see how any of those are related. Unless you got a chime similar to what you get when you forget to turn off your lights and open the drivers door, the beep was probably some warning system in the stereo head unit. Some warn when they loose power. What brand is it?

I'm not sure if the global closing uses the modules in the doors or not. If not, then I would suspect atleast one of them to be the problem. If global closing does use the modules, then my guess is poor connection in the switch(es) and/or problems with wiring.

Anyone with more knowledge of the electrical system in the doors will probably come along soon.

After market fittings often cause problems with the Scorps electrics. Check the following fuses in the central(drivers side) fuse box. Fuse 1 Mirrors,Fuse 8 Radio, fuse 21 Mirrors, fuse 26 front windows. Make sure the lid is properly fitted afterwards as water is deadly in these units.

The beep was not from the radio but from the same unit that beeps when you're low on fuel etc.

I checked the fuses (and will do it again) but as the windows are working when using the key I suspect that it cannot be the fuses.

Problem solved.

Thanks for pointing out to check the fuses. It was fuse no. 8 (radio) that was broken! After replacing it the windows and mirrors are working again.

I remember that this was the first I checked when the radio went dead but not after making the jumper.

A good lesson about how to always do the easy checks first and do them again just to be sure and to remember that there might be much more behind the fuse than what is mentioned.

Glad you got it sorted.Must be some common connection to the power feed in there somewhere !!?.  ???
