Title: thermostat
Post by seanrach on Aug 15th, 2006, 8:03pm
:'(hi.
is there anyone out there who could help me?
Im off on my hols fri, towing a caravan. My cossie has been running hot for the past few days, so much so, that it blew steam out of the overflow on the expansion tank. I have already flushed the water system out and put in fresh, and got all the air out of the system.

It was still getting hot so after checking on the fault finder, I decided to change the thermostat, I got a new one from the shop and set about changhing it.
:-/F***, where is it. Ive worked on loads of cars but Ive never seen such a novice mechanics nightmare. After I eventually found it, |I tried to remove it. Thats where the problems start.

My car is up on ramps now.
How do I get the d**n thing out?
Do i need to remove the air con pump?
Is it a sealed unit?
cos the one i bought looks just like a plain old thermostat, yet the cossie one looks to be built inside a housing. Although I cant get it out to see properly.
Help needed, urgently.
Thanks
Sean :( :( :(

Can't help you a lot but the thermostat on the cossie is not like a normal one as found in most cars.
Not that cheap to buy either.
Someone will point you in the right direction soon.

Haven't seen the Cossie thermostat but it sounds very similar in design to those used on the Rover 2.0 L-series turbo-diesel engine.  They cost about £27 and I think the dealer had them in stock or got it next day.

The Cosworth thermostat is a fully enclosed unit which is a three way unit.

I did have to wait 6 months for mine but I might have been unlucky having to wait for Fords to make some to fulfill demand. They have been reported on the shelves and it may be worth giving fordparts UK an email and see if they have one in stock.

One word of advice, change the hoses too, I never did first time and ended up stopping at every service station between Dover and Warrington to top the water up because of a split hose!

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.
Was able to get a replacement. Ford had trouble locating one but found one available in gloucester.
Fitted and running well, TOUCH WOOD.
didnt replace the hoses though, will keep an eye for that now youve mentioned it. :-[
