Title: water leek near thermostat housing 2.3
Post by scorpio197 on Aug 18th, 2006, 7:25pm
Hello folks ,my pride and joy has sprung a water leek near the thermostat housing ,it seems to be part of the inlet manifold .Does this mean I need a new inlet manifold or is there another way around this .A friend of mine said maybe you could cut away the housing part and fit a free standing thermostat housing so its not part of the manifold ,I am no mechanic so can anyone out there help ...regards david

David, I think you will find that this problem has been overcome by the use of a 'plastic metal' type compound. Hopefully someone will be along shortly to advise further.

Thanks Simmo ,I have been looking at some of the old postings for the last few months ,it seems a common problem ,but most time linked to a blown head gasket  :-[  :-[

hi there

depending on the size/ location of the crack, you can use 'quick steel' to fix it. you might need to remove it from the car (you'd need to if replacng, anyway).

i ripped the brass nut from the plastic manifold (temp sensor) from mine while changing it and fixed it in place with quick steel. that was a year ago (15k miles), and no issue.

best to try first as new one are expensive and rare. follow the instruction carefully for best results.

I bet the leak is on the seam, A weak point where they all appear to go.
I paid £230 for one.

correct the leek is on the seam ,FMD quoted me £180 + vat and £165 +vat to put it on .The worst thing is that the scorp was going in for a paint job next week ,that will have to wait a week or so now .

Hello folks ,just an update on the water leak . My FMD fitted a new inlet manifold .The mechanic broke off an injector ,so I had to wait until the next day to get my scorp back. When I got to the FMD I was greeted by the service manager who said :its all fixed injector replaced :but its running very lumpy .....??? what do you mean lumpy I said ,it was ok when I left it with you .He said come and have a look so I did .theres my scorp up on the ramp we go underneath the engine running real bad .He sprays brake cleaner up at the cat for a few seconds it runs smooth and says your cats gone .to cut a long story short I spent all day to find some one with a cat to fit .and when they took of the heat sheilds there was a nice new looking crack in the middle of the manifold .so one fixed one cracked and only cost me 400 quid ..question to all you mechanics out there ,if the mechanic broke of an injector and tried to start it ,would it flood the system with fuel and could this on ignition be enough to crack the exhaust manifold and would neat fuel damage the cat ??????? I WILL NEVER GO TO AN FMD AGAIN

hi mate

i'd say it's likely, im sure there is something on the main page, possible the fault finder section, about unburnt fule destroying cats, making them glow bright red...

Simmo,

it's likely that it's on that page, but i seem to remember a bit more of a lenghty write up, i'll have to sit down and read the main site again !

but reading bit so far, it is quite possible that unburnt fule has entered the cat, destroying it  :(, but thats unlikely to be the cause of the cracked manifold, but isnt it a common problem of the 2.3's? i know my estate had a cracked exhaust manifold, but a 2.0 one will fit if ur stuck

have you had the head checked over, i know that when the plastic inlet cracks, most of the 2.3's ive seen also then have cracked heads (between cylinders 2 and 3)

i put a pic on an earlier topic

Scorpio 197, Matt has read the link I put up but thinks there may be more info. If you read the link it would seem that may be a 'scan' would indicate a fault which could help your case. As for the exhaust manifold they certainly have a tendency to crack as indeed mine did, 2ltr 16v, and frankly I did not know. It was found when the clutch went.
