Title: Just anoter cause of racing idle..and how to fix i
Post by OHC on Aug 21st, 2006, 6:47am
Hello:

I’d like to contribute to the fault finder section with another cause of bad/racing  idle. The symptoms are the following: racing idle when hot. Revs  fall below normal and suddenly rise up to 1000 rpm, hang there and fall again, especially when ACC is on. No system in this at all. Idle can be normal for the whole day, but in the evening… oops!

Typical air leak, but there? I’ve checked everything, but… There is a PCV breather valve tucked neatly on the engine block under exhaust manifold. You won’t see it unless you know or dismantle inlet trunk and use a small mirror. This valve sits in  a grommet on  a big barrel-like thing. The valve is connected to the metal tube with a peace of rubber hose, fixed by two standard ford clips. It’s very hot over there so the rubber is ‘protected by a peace of metal sleeve. On my car 2.0 16v this hose was broken, so air leak etc. etc.

How to fix it? This small hose is pig to change. :P First, let the engine cool down, then dismantle air inlet trunks with VIS resonator box. Loosen the clip on the hose near tube with a pair of long-nosed pliers. Then pull the valve upwards from the grommet (the metal tube can rotate a bit) then outwards from metal tube. Give the valve a good clean with carb cleaner . This valve must be replaced each 40000 miles, but nobody knows about it! Neither did i, so it's better to buy a new one (approx. 5 GBP from FORD)

Replace the broken hose. Beware: a new one should have exactly the same length. Don’t forget to put the protective sleeve on. Apply a bit of high temp gasket maker on the valve where it touches the grommet (not too much). Put the nose on the valve, fix the clip. Squeeze the other and on the tube (a bit of WD40 will help). Insert the valve in its grommet, check the fit is nice and tight.

Enjoy smooth stable idle!!! 8)

Best regards,

OHC

Do you have the part number?

Good information - thanks

Hello!

Unfortunately not. But I think the valve is just the same for all Fords - Mondy, older Granada, Escort. As for the hose itself I took longer crankcase ventilation hose  from some other car (I had it in my garage) and cut the length.

I'll be very gald if it helps someone!!!

OHC
