Something similar to this happened to me in the past after the car was unused for a period of time and the battery was low.   Turn the key and then nothing.........but the lights still worked.

Try disconnecting the battery for an hour and reconnecting it.    Don't know why it worked but it did........maybe a sticking relay.

Hope this helps

Look HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm) and go through the list to see if the symptons match.

None really match.

checked the electrics and found the following.

The circuits work that dont require the ignition in the accesory or ignition on position.

basically the radio works, the sidelights work - everything else is dead.

checked with multimeter and no voltage is present at the back of the ignition switch.

Anyone got any further ideas ?

I have a Saab technician, Skoda technician and Alfa technician all looking at it scratching their heads.

Ok, my 3 monkeys took the main fusebox out to check connections/etc.

On refitting they found the Ignition Lock fuse blown.

Replace Ignition Lock fuse and the car starts ok, dash back to life.

However, not the headlights dont work (rear lights ok), indicators wont work, wipers wont work.

Anyone got any pointers on this one ?

The fusebox multiplug isnt seated properly ;)

Ok, tried the multiplug thing, it wasnt seated properly.

However, now it is seated properly and the car starts, sidelights, wipers, indicators all work.

If  I put on the headlights, they dont work and when I turn the ignition off, the car still runs without the key in the ignition until I turn the headlights off.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh - my poor head !

Check back from the fusebox for wiring damage or corrosion.

Had this on my wife's MR2 recently. Running with the key out. Thought it was the Alternator or Ignition switch. Spent hours and hours looking for the cause.
The problem turned out to be a whole chunk of the wiring  down behind the fusebox which was green, corroded and  almost welded together. How water gets into plastic sheathed wiring I don't know....but it does!

Fusebox seems most likely but do check the wiring under it.

The fusebox was mint when they took it out yesterday - no water or corrosion at all.

They did however have a poke around between the layers.

He is checking connections this morning to see whats going on.

The lights do come on for a brief second before going off, main beam works fine.

I guess the other option is to find a fusebox from somewhere.

I'm sure we've had a similar problem before !!.  Have you checked the actual light switch itself ? and any connectors in the engine bay?.

The lightswitch keeping the engine running has only appeared since they removed the fusebox. I guess they disturbed something.

Another update.

The lightswitch gives the following.

Off, all lights off.
Sidelights - Dip beam lights are on.
Headlights - main beam flashes on then goes off, dip beam remains on.

Anyone here got a photo of the main fusebox (drivers side) - I need to check they put the relays back in the correct place.

I got the handbook, but I was just wondering if it is possible they have put the wrong relays in the wrong slots.

All different colours.

Wooooohooooo - finally Ive sorted it.

The relays were put back in all over the place.

Quick shuffle and put them as they are in the photo above and its all working fine.

Morale of the story - don't let anyone else mess with your motor.

Thanks to everyone for their help - actually, reading the posts, I sussed this one out on my own :)
