Title: Fixed the ABS problem (I think!)
Post by Butterfingers on Sep 10th, 2006, 7:50pm
Well, been having problems with the ABS for a while. Had it diagnosed to the drivers front wheel as open circuit. However, the light continued to go on and off as it pleased.

Tried to remove the sensor to clean it but it is stuck and wont budge. However, I then removed the black cap on the inside face of the hub and sprayed a load of carb cleaner on the back end of the sensor and around the hub. I put the wheel back on and took it for a drive. As soon as I got over 15mph the abs light extinguised.

So it appears that you do not have to take the sensor out to clean it. Just remove the black cap on the inside face of the hub and make sure the bottom end of the sensor gets cleaned. ALso the hub spinning around that the sensor detects has teeth. So be very careful if you chisel or drill the sensor out. Metal could get trapped in the teeth causing problems.

Disaster struck this morning.  ???
Misery, misery, misery. :'( :'( :'(
Started up this morning, and the ABS decided to stay on. The front ABS sensor is clean so maybe its a wire somewhere?

Anyway is it possible for a sensor that is clean to work intermittently?

Thanks.

Thank you Simmo. Very interesting approach!

I had my ABS diagnosed and the problem was traced to the front drivers wheel sensor. Bloke said it had gone open circuit. But how can it be open circuit and still work from time to time.

I had identical problem with the same wheel. abs light would come on every now and again and pedal would vibrate at low speeds ....cleaned inside hub with carb cleaner cleared for a few days then back again. Odd if sensor is clean that it can work for a while then go bad. In end I had sensor changed and solved problem
