Title: NEW HERE AND HAVE AN AUTO BOX PROBLEM
Post by rallyx on Sep 23rd, 2006, 11:00pm

Hello everyone
my name is Robin Perry and i would like to congrateulate everyone on a fantastic site

Now to the problem. i have just bought a 1998 2.3 16v ghia X
aoto saloon 126,000 miles but a beautiful car . i always hankered after one and now i have one

The car is in perfect shape just gone through MOT faultlessly etc

The problem is the auto box and here are the exact symtoms

the car being warm or cold has no bearing in any way

engage D- no drive - engine just revs

engage 2 - car takes up drive normal

engage 1 - no drive

engage R - car take drive normal

press traction control button engage D  takes up drive normal  car now can be driven totaly normaly all day

when driving in D normally press S or E buttons and you get their desired effect sports and econ and while keeping moving all day

but stop at lights t junction etc go to move off  - NO DRIVE   PRESS TRACTION CONTROL AGAIN AND OFF YOU GO

SO BASICLY THE GEARBOX WORKS NORMALY EXCEPT FROM STATIONARY WERE THE ENGINE JUST REVS AND NO DRIVE IS PICKED UP  AND PRESSING THE TRACTION CONTROL BUTTON ON CURES THIS

I hope i have not gone on to long and hope that you can under stand my decription

any suggestions, advice or ideas as to what the problem is would be very much appreciated

            Yours Sincerely

                 Robin Perry

hi there

have you checked the autobox (black dipstick) fluid level? get the engine up to temp then cycle through the gears 3 times (r,d,2,1), all with the engine running. still with the engine running, check the level. take out the dipstick, wipe, return and then check it.

it should be a reddy colour with only an oily smell (not burnt).

let us know how you get on.

If it's the same as in Norway, wether it can move forward or not doesn't matter as long as it's not a hazard for driver/passenger or others in traffic (and environment).

yes i agree ...clean the MAF carefully..the instructions are on the fault finding page on the front of this site. Have you got someone near with a OBD lead to scan your cars Brain?? This will look uo any fault codes..please double check and make absolutely sure if your told by a mechanic that the gearbox is dead cos a few members on the site had similar only to find it was an electronic issue or a fixable component inside the box. like has been said b4 ,,have a look at the level and colour of oil...

hope it works out. []

you are missing 1st gear, poss an electrical gremlin, though cant think why TC can effect it. do you have TC (button up at side of park brake) or is it the 'snow' button by the gear stick, if so then it will pull off in 2nd not 1st.

Sounds to me like an electrical germlin, if there was a fault in the gearbox, you'd notice more than loss of 1st in drive, all the autos I've driven with bad boxes have been far worse. If the box behaves well besides this (smooth shifts etc), its probably fine although a change of oil and filters would help ensure its longevity...

Sounds like a fault in the TCS module, isn't this related to the ABS module?
