went to remove the new auto dim mirror from the ultima i BOUGHT FOR SPARES WHEN i noticed the wire going up into the roof under the reading lights. Do i have to remove this light panel to get at the end of the wire??

Yes. It just 'springs' out and then you can undo a couple of screws which retain the housing and the wire can be eased out underneath once you have disconnected the plug. Don't forget the mirror is removed by a sharp DOWNWARD tug in line with the slope of the windscreen. If you lever towards the interior of the car you'll break the screen and probably the mirror stem.

so remove the reading light plastic simmo??

ps gonna try the reset and battery disconnect tomoro to try and solve this dead speedo / everything else works on the unit tho..the odo the milo..the rev counter just a speedo needle pointing down and not moving.

Read THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/electrical/intbasic/MotorSlidingRoof.pdf). It will show you what to do re the light unit but you only need to undo the screws you don't need to remove the surround it will be free enough to let you get the cable for the mirror out by the top of the screen.
