Title: Replacement Rad - No expansion hose outlet...!
Post by bridgdav on Sep 30th, 2006, 9:34am
Just got the rad replacement for my V6..  after balloning old one..!

The new rad doesn't have an expansion tank outlet...

Is this a big problem..?  My V6 TVR has the same set-up..!

Any advice..  can I still fit the rad but pay attantion to the fluid levels more often..?  will the system over pressurise..? - More balloning.?

Cheers in advance..

Dave

Its the wrong one, probably a 12v or one of the others.

It will cause a problem eventually, im sure the diameter of the vanes on the 24v rad are larger than the rest.

I'm trying to figure the logic in the system...

Surely with 2 out/inlets to the expansion tank...  the one from the Rad looks like a ford afterthought...  did they have problems on the earlier ones..  Mines a 'P'.

There is still a pressure cap on the Expansion tank, the feed from the top of the block will exhaust the pressure back to the tank...  why the need for the second outlet..?  Is it a V6 cooling balance thing..?

The rad looks identical in every other way..!

:-/

What to do....  Fit of fling..?

I'm not sure what that little hose is for but I suspect that with the engine cold, coolant will circulate through the top hose, top of radiator, vent pipe and back into the tank (along with going through heater matrix, etc).
Once the thermostat opens I would expect the flow through that hose to stop.

If I'm right then the hose is for pressure relief and neccessary due to the position of the thermostat in the return from the radiator (rather than in the feed as is usual) - otherwise the radiator would be under higher pressure than usual until the thermostat opens.

Agreed...

The vent pipe from the top of the rad goes straight to the expansion tank..

Surely with the system under pressure (hot & running)  the expansion tank will be pressurised as well..? from that pipe.

Does the system vent through the water pump and other feed hose as well..?

Is the top rad expansion hose just there to balance the system..?

I've tried Chaps as he has one going spare..!
I might just wait and fit that..!

Does THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/coolingmanl.htm) help.
