Yes I own a Scorpio. but the problem is my wife's 306 1.9 diesel and i'm desperate. Awhile ago the heater would not work and the motor would overheat. Seems there was a problem bleeding the system, you would go to top coolant up on filler cap beside rad and it would just about blow the cap off. Local mechanic said it was'nt a head gasket, bled the system and the problem dissapeared, but now it looks like it's back. Was a catch 22 situation where you would be inclined not to check the coolant level as releasing the cap would let air into the system and you'd be back to square one. Coolant filler is part of the radiator and one cant see the level as the plastic has turned opaque! When working properly thermatic fans will kick in and keep temp around the half mark, but now they dont tend to kick in. One heater hose is warm while the other is'nt. Blockage in Rad? Any thoughts appreciated. I know this is the Scorpio site but that's goin OK.

Try reading reply no 8 HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1150805119;start=8#8). The 'Johnnycab' patent method. If you think the rad is the problem why not 'back flush' it with a hose pipe?.

Thanks for reply, will give that a go. Just to clarify, this radiator looking front on, top right hose to thermostat housing, bottom left- hose out of plastic section( part of rad with pressure cap on it ). Would this then involve disconnecting lower pipe then attaching clear pipe to this. Could you briefly run through the procedure of back flushing.

I think you should bite the bullet and reverse flush the radiator. :'(

Disconnect the top and bottom hoses and flush through with a hosepipe from alternate ends until the water runs clear. Next do exactly the same with the hoses. Make sure you have left the heater control on its hottest setting and the heater matrix will also get flushed through.

When its all connected back up, refill with a top quality antifreeze that contains corrosion inhibitors.

Nearly forgot dont use any nozzles on the hose, normal tap pressure should do it, just increase gradually until you get the water coming out the other end.

On a lot of newer cars the heater matrix is part of the coolant flow system,if it becomes blocked the engine will over heat as the water cant flow fully round the system,you could try to reverse flush it.Check the thermostats ok too,replace it if in doubt,removing the cap wont let any more air into the system than is already in it!! normal way to bleed air out is to run it till stat. opens with cap off then fit cap ,most pugs have bleed screws in (they vary in pos.) top hose, bolt in stat. housing, heater matrix hose.The hose ones look like tyre valve caps! run till water comes out refit cap, dash out job for the matrix i think youl find

Thanks everyone, will try the flush on both the rad and the heater matrix, sounds like the heater, and a terrible job at that removing the dash!
One last thing, If I've bled the air out of the system with water and I want to run either pure coolant or a 50/50 anti Freeze mix. Could be a stupid question, but how do I add it without too much waste?, or is it just a matter of syphining some out and adding?

The Handbok will tell you the capacity of the wholes system... drain put in 50% concetrate anti freze an then top up with water.... and then mix the remainder of the antifrezeze to the required strength for any " top ups " that may be required.
