I have a similar problem to Penguin.

My 1998 2.3 Ultima automatic starts fine first thing in the morning, but when I put it into reverse, it seems to have no power and judders as it creeps back. If I put it into drive, I get the same symptom.

However, I can then switch off the ignition, immediately start the car again and all is absolutely fine.

Does this sound like the valve spring problem?

I'd check your Automatic transmission fluid level. Sounds as though it's low.

I can't quite understand why you think it would be a valve spring problem.......... ???

Have you had any work done that involved taking off the IACV.

I had exactly the same problem a couple of months back after I had taken off the IACV, cleaned it & put it back on. The car ticked over a bit rough but when I put it in reverse or drive then it felt like the engine was gonna jump out.
Turned the car off & restarted it & all was fine again.

Just out of interest I removed/replaced the IACV again & it did the same. But once restarted again it's been right as rain ever since. :)

Possibly the mixture was temporarily thrown out, confusing the PCM? :-/

Hi Mick,

The engine juddering problem when engaging the transmission cold is more likely one of the gearbox solenoids going out of range and causing a feedback to the PCM. For some electrical reason this makes the engines lose a couple of cylinders.

A code read of the Transmission codes will show the faulty solenoid, it is usually the Pressure Regulator solenoid.

A good reputable Transmission Shop will be able to sort it for you and change the oil and filter in gearbox at the same time. ;D

Spanners, I think he was referring to the broken valve block spring problem that I was discussing earlier in the week, rather than an engine valve spring !! ;)

Thanks for the replies.

Took it to a garage where diagnostics showed a faulty solenoid which was replaced, but still intermittently experiencing the same problem. The automatic transmission fluid level is fine.

Just a clutch at straws, but usually seems to happen when the weather's been cold.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what's the IACV?

Hi Mick,

Idle Air Control Valve, basically will cause stalling / hunting idle if its sticky. It adjusts the engine Idle RPM to the desired level depending on the desired RPM logged in the Engine management computer.

Some members have succesfully cleaned them and freed them up but as they seem to do 80,000 miles before giving trouble I always renew them if suspect.

Sounds to me like you may have another solenoid going out of range intermittantly now, which makes sense, if ones gone the others wont be far behind it. Try having it re -read. Also make certain of the integrity of the transmission wiring loom.

Don't know if anyone will visit this thread again, but ............. I have exactly the same problem with reverse/Drive in the morning - big clunk, engine on two-ish cylinders - switch off and restart and all's well. Otherwise gearbox as smooth as silk. Probably a definitive answer to the problem is too much to hope for, but if anyone has found a cure..........?
