Title: Radiator
Post by tintin on Dec 12th, 2006, 5:56pm
OK good news, my car now has 2 new cats and 2 new pre-cat sensors (£350 later....)

Bad news, it now has decided its christmas and has asked for a new radiator. it is not leaking for first 5-10 mins, then seems to gush, but when fully warm it is water-proof again. its gushing from the seam on the side (upright), is this a normal place to go? symptoms make sense?

So, anyone got a good cossie rad (Highlander?  ;D)

The garage want £100 to fit it..... seems a bit high to me  ???

PS i filled it last night with water, 9 litres, drove it to the garage, it got to temp for 10 mins, at the other end, no loss and no drip, no air lock symptoms? will be driving it home tonight and let you know how i get on, it was filled with water at 5pm..... so fingers crossed,

you're on !!! ask andy, i also pay in large bottles of vodka if you prefer.... ;D ive got some time off soon, so i can even act as spanner monkey.....

how much would you pay for a 2nd hand one? if its from someone i dont know, i reckon i pay for postage and if it holds water, i pay the rest, does that sound reasonable?

as always, indebted sir....

good man !

just went to pick it up, exhaust is knocking like a right 'un, have left it there.....

good news is that there was still water in it. ignorance time, is the air con rad in the same loop as the rest of the water? could it be that that is leaking (wouldnt be the first garage to assume it was the rad). just thinking, air con would come on for 5-10 mins, then go off again, would match my water loss symptoms....

when will the agony end  >:( >:( >:(

ok, so definately the engine rad then, that is losing water..... must just be leaking at a certain temperature..... 2ndgear says he has a good one for me  ;D just need a price

thermostat i think is ok, temp rises steadily to half and stays rock solid.

you drove it and it didnt lose any water??

Can you actually see where the leak is at the side of the rad or just water??

I've got one with a leaky matrix that sometimes loses a fair bit then will run fine for ages and never lose a drop..

Better make sure it is definitely the rad before we undertake such a large job ;)

;D ;D

it has been losing small amounts, ive been topping up last 2 months. after the rolling road, it drove back from glasgow no leak, had sat for 2 weeks and took 9 litres to top it up. drove though town, got to garage, no leak. i asked garage to keep an eye on it, they told me when checking the exhaust, it started to gush after 5-10 mins, they topped up. i left it 4 hrs, went to pick it up, no warning light, drove it 5 mins, decided the exhaust was broken and returned it  still no warning light, but didnt get warm :(

ps, when i glanced underneath i think i saw bandage/cement on the exhaust  :(  :(

sounds a funny one, doesnt sound like a leaky rad as it would show as soon as it was put under pressure and it wouldnt stop

yippee just picked up the car, its driving much better, idle is rock solid at about 800rpm, loads more power (although i have been driving about in my MG Metro, so this may be a relative thing....), and no sign of the leak  ???

will take a look at it on friday (day off) and see if i can get it to leak for me, and where from, but still need a radiator i suspect. in case of no 2nd hand one, what sort of price for a new one? anyone?

ps of course, i dont expect my car back from a garage without further issues, in this case the electric windows controllor on the door seems to now have a loose connection, sometimes lit up and working, sometimes not, but a hefty wallop sorts it out.....

and still need a radiator and rework my vacuum pipes, but hey, it goes fast now !!

Think last time someone enquired about one from FMD it was around the £350 mark  ;D

I would wait till you know for sure you need one though, it might be a hose or a gasket
