Title: Ignition Control/Amplifier Unit Post by KronosKeylock on Dec 16th, 2006, 11:24am My 2.9i 12 Valve has been in the garage for a week after expiring on the way to work the other day. My mechanic has checked everything and has narrowed it down to a fault with the ignition control/amplifier unit. This sits on the side of the distributor by where the Multiplug goes in. He is having trouble ordering a replacement unit as none of his suppliers can find a listing for the part. He can get one for a two litre but not a 2.9, are these availiable as a seperate part or do I have to buy a new distributor? Any help would be greatly appreciated |

Title: Re: Ignition Control/Amplifier Unit Post by mike on Dec 16th, 2006, 11:20pm Is it the part that's attached to the side of the distributor by a couple of hard to reach 7/32" bolts? Then this is the infamous TFI ("Thick Film Ignition") module which got Ford into a big lawsuit in the US. (just do a google search with the words Ford and TFI...) And yes, it is the same part as on the 2 liter. If you have the right socket to squeeze between the distributor and the bulkhead, replacement is a 5 minute job. The new part should come with a small tube of heat conductive grease: make sure your mechanic does'nt forget to smear it on the TFI before he puts it on. Cheers, Mike |
