Title: Coolant top-ups...
Post by Penguin on Dec 17th, 2006, 2:00am
I seem to have a minor coolant leak which is comming from the mid-right of the engine and inderterminate cause.  First question is what I am I looking at.  Not radiator balooning, not core plugs (new), not the gear oil thing (gear oil is fine).

Second question is (since I have no time to have it seen to before I have to do a 1000 mile round trip over Christmas) is that is the ready mixed coolant sold in Halfords okay (for a Cosser).  Thus far this leak (which seems to occur only when the car is standing and not when its running) has not reduced the coolant below minimum but if did then I would want some top up handy.  And if that one is no good, what is and where can I get it from?

Cheers

Ready mixed coolant from Halfords ?....how much is that for 5 litres....you'd need 7.5 litres anyway, at least.

5 litres of good undiluted anti-freeze should be between 10 & 15 quid.

I paid £12.99 for 5 litres of Blue Star antifreeze from the local motor spares  :)

The poshest of Halford's stuff is £16/5 litres. Does that make it okay?

I wouldn't need 7.5 litres just for top up would I!? I'm not leaking it that fast...

Sorry Penguin....misunderstood your post slightly  ::)...

Best to buy a small bottle of anti-freeze & mix it....

Apparently, the cheapest anti-freeze is from Woolworths.....5 litres for 6.99....couldn't guarantee it though  :)

Hi Penguin,
whatever you buy make sure its the same colour as the stuff already in the rad. They're either pinkisk or blue/green. Apparently they react and its not good for the rad  but it'll be alright for emergencies so long as you dont leave it too long.

The Scorps usually have blue/green antifreeze at around 50%. I use Comma X-streem Green in mine. Paid about £10/5 litres from good factor (but its £5/litre from my local car spares  :o )

Hi,

My cossie had a leak around there, coming from below the manifold on the passenger side. There is a hose running to a thermostat under there, a pig to get at. It might be that.

The pipe was ballooning when hot, and dropping coolant. Was fine when cooled down, or on the motorway, just when stationery in traffic.

Hope this help,
