Title: battery
Post by tintin on Dec 18th, 2006, 6:24pm
ok, so i go to put some antifreeze in (its going to be -1 here tonight) after it lost all its coolant (i had filled with just water), and the battery has nothing at all in it. i assume its the drivers electric window panel, as i noticed it coming on and off on the way home from the garage (although it may be the new lambdas....)

1) at -1 does it need antifreeze
2) if so, i need to jump it, as charging overnight will be too late, any hints and tips to avoid damage, i know these scorps have delicate electrics at the best of times....

hi sam

it needs anti-freeze all year round (stops rust in the waterways, etc). it's a 50-50 mix water/anti-freeze.

re jump starting. see handbook (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook114.gif).

hmm, ok it jumped fine, warmed up and started dripping (its definately coming from the radiator, passenger side, down the seam, but cant really see down that edge without taking things off it).

good, i thought, drive it a bit, lose a litre or two and top up with antifreeze...... except when warm it isnt dripping, and its only lost 1/4 litre on a 5 mile run (probably all when it was warming up). what the  ???

will check again in a couple of hours to see if colonel mustard has been back to the car and removed some of the water (and if it will start), otherwise its getting left overnight, its too cold out there  :D

ps andy it started first time, no rattle any more, and still goes great.... could the new lambdas be draining the battery?

hi sam

hope not, they should only use 12 volts for 3 minutes to heat the sensors up. then it's 1 volt for the switching.

maybe the battery/alternator? you're not using it much just now? didn't you say you can see a dim charging light? could be all these things.

Hi tintin

If it is a cosworth and it freezes, it will pop the core plug in the bell housing, engine out.
It happened to me, not very nice.
